    where would these wires go on my evinrude rpm counter

    Common OMC wire colours for the older engines

    At a guess, Purple to 12 volt, black to ground and white (if that is white - normal harness colour would be grey) to signal (pul) . The additional terminal up the top is for the backlight. You can either add a feed off a switch or connect it to the purple wire as well.

    Colours are as mentioned, but, you will need to set the little switch to make it read right for your motor.
