Looks as if power loss was the issue. Not sure what you can if it was in fact engine failure.
    Undie changer for sure though.

On the up side - what on earth do you have to do to sink or roll that boat - he tried just about everything.

I think it's a great example of just how clueless some boaties can be - underpowered without a doubt ( even in a bathtub) , overloaded by a long way. lifejackets ??? weight distribution …

That boat - should not have been anywhere near a bar ...

I've seen similar things here in Oz

    Chris
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

NAGG that is a good point about weight distribution i am always on top of it but i have one friend who just does not care or to even listen, when we are drifting or anchored he sits anywhere lop siding the boat even out in open ocean i have raised the concern many many times but he keeps doing it.. and doesn't move

Had one recently - a deckie goes from the starboard side front to the port side & down the back because he got some spray …….. the trouble was that it was in the middle of a bar crossing the last thing I wanted to be doing was trimming the boat with the trim tabs & motor halfway through the bar.

If a boat is that sensitive to trim at rest that swamping may result it shouldn’t be offshore in the first place

Not necessarily - I would not call any barcrusher not seaworthy …… but they are trim sensitive due to their hull design. With trim tabs the boat is easily adjusted & very sweet .

this event highlights that once the skipper is out of the equation , the crew are vulnerable because of many reasons but really for the point that rarely does a skipper entrust plan b unto some one else. when was the last time a skipper said in the event of me going over, this is a procedure to follow.
i myself have never really done this except for the words HOLD ON. ha ha but i think next time i will say , now lads if i go over then cut the outboard and throw the damn anchor out .

Funny you mention it catshark, I was out on the weekend with my young bloke who is 10 and gave him a rundown on the boat, anchor, how to start motor etc just in the event that something does happen to me while out with him. we were only in the river but he took it all on board, listen very intently and was quite shitting himself i must say. Told him to relax, just want to start getting him familiar with how it all works you never know. I get him to do a pre launch check, making him go over things to make sure i have untied, put bungs in etc and same before driving off once back on trailer. It works as I recently failed to put in one bung on purpose to see if he was on to it and to my great pleasure, i said to him ok lets reverse her down and put her in and he walked around the boat and said " hey dad, you missed a bung!" i could not have been happier he picked it up! Proud dad moment....

When we go out its usually the same people we all know how to operate a boat but one time i took my nephew out he was 14 15 never driven a car before or a boat i got him to putt around at idle while i downrigged he loved it he later mentioned he would come out with me again if i asked and he is not a water sport kind of kid fully into motocross

have never really thought about man over board have only considered a capsized boat where we are all in the drink from a nancy that wants to lop side the boat

i like that flir camera moose had a pic up of but mighty expensive however if someone went over you would find them pretty quickly

    Re: boating mishap

Suppose things like this can happen to any of us not so much a big boat 15hp outboard going over a bar but something rather so simple after a 10 hour day in 40c heat

I know im not the best thinker on those stinking hot summer days where u have been blasted by the sun for 10-12 hours u feel like your a shriveled up roasted prawn and just wanna be home in a air conditioned room

What takes a split second to react when your fresh on the boat at 6am may be different after the summer sun has drawn it out of you and your tired and lethagic

So far nothing serious has happen to me or my mates i think we use a fair amount of responsibility and have decent knowledge of boating but anything can happen

3 blokes in one back corner all getting excited over netting a fish next thing your capsized and swimming without a life vest it gets real real quick something so minor can appear out of no where

Situations happen its how u go about it after it that counts

Lucky i dont have to cross a bar to open waters
