Thread: New bag and size limits as of today

If the picture is so bleak that harsh measures are needed then they have to be for all. I doubt we will have a lobby group negotiating on behalf of Recs for compensation.

Not quit the same as a charter operator who fishes for a living I’m afraid , but good try . Matt
A bad days fishing has got to be better than any day at work......

Either the fishery is in such dire straits that everyone needs to take a haircut or it’s not. The recreational stake holders invest orders or magnitude more than charter stake holders to catch Snapper. Many Recs spend the vast majority of their disposable income on fishing.

Hmmm I see it totally different to that, a charter operator will continue to work during the shutdown period but a lot more fish will be wasted as they wil just throw them back until they catch something for the customers they can keep . As for rec anglers investing a majority of their income in fishing its highly doubtful that that is the case unlike charter operators who do this for a living , there is going to be change to these rules I think you will find as it just won’t work for everyone at this stage . Don't pro anglers catch fish for a living? it's pretty much the same thing, I know there has to be exemptions at times, but, if things need to be done, then it's done across the board, charter operators can just as easily fish for (say) Flathead for a "feed" for their customers.

I thought that the "extended charter" of more than 1 week rule wasn't scrapped or being still debated. There's been so much discussion around these issues that I've lost track. The interesting thing is that about a week ago I checked the DAF site on fish limits as i wanted to update my charts (includes photos so my friends can look it up themselves) and it still had a few of the new limits missing.

Well even in the dire straits that SA is in, at least they are putting in a method to show exactly how many Snapper the Rec sector are taking. Piss poor from our mob.

Wonder what the rec tags will cost?

And if you get, say 10 tags, it doesn't mean you've caught 10 fish, unless you need more tags. But it's a way forward anyhow.

Then those few tags that don’t go onto fish will get counted as caught fish regardless. You probably will only be allowed to get your “in possession” limit at a time. I still think a catch card via an app system is the best solution. Maybe a standardised brag mat that you lay the Snapper on and take a photo of the fish in the app and it registers its length. As soon as you’re back in 3G range the catch card automatically updates to the fisheries server. It’s not that hard and certainly not that expensive.

'Single-use' tags. That will be a challenge in itself.

Look what going fishing has turned into a bloody joke.

Nah. Absolutely nothing has changed for me.
I'm a simple fisher who goes out to enjoy the day and maybe bring a feed or two home if I can.
Reduced bag limits, increased size limits etc just means I might have to go fishing more often (not a bad thing) or chase something else if I feel like it. I don't try to fill my freezer even if the opportunity is there.
It's still a cheap (for me) and enjoyable way to spend a day with a mate or have some 'me' time and a beer or two.
My day is in no way completely and totally ruined and a supreme disappointment if I don't bag out on upper size limit fish, or come home with a doughnut for that matter.
    Nothing too serious here.

If I may quote someone wise... "It's the quest.... not the conquest"

    Cheers
    Gurn
