    Bow Eye & Safety Chain

    Just a very quick question.

After I have connected winch strap to boat and retrieved I cannot connect the shackles of the safety chain. It’s just the way the winch hook sits not allowing room to connect.

I can and do connect the safety chain shackle first and the winch hook is a very tight fit.

Has anyone else come across that and what did you do.

Can you buy an oval shaped or larger bow eye fitting.

Can’t put a smaller hook on, the one you have looks massive!

Wide mouth 6mm shackle and/or grind a little off the back of the hook.
You will probably find the shackle mouth is fouling on the hook not allowing the shackle to go over enough to get the pin through.

Have you tried putting the bow of the shackle through the eye - possibly before fitting the hook if required.

Put a shackle in between the eye and the strap. Plain D shackle not a bow shackle would be best.

If the post is adjustable raise it a coupla inches and fit a bow shackle.

I have used a shackle instead of a hook for years now, get one that the "bolt" is captive so you can't drop it, only takes a second longer than a hook and is much better, then the safety chain shackle will fit easy.
