    Red face Southport (Spit) Jetty Underwater Situation - Rocky or Sandy

    Hi Folks,

    I spent a fishless night on the Southport Jetty a couple weeks ago. I did see them swimming around. But they just didn't bite. I started to think about using my cast net. Then there is a question.

    Is the bottom of the sea around the sand pump jetty rocky or sandy? If that's rocky, casting net apparently isn't an option. If it's sandy and flat, it might worth trying.

    I may need to consider the strong current as well...

    I was wondering if anyone ever tried cast net on the Southport (spit) jetty?

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,
    Carl

    Hi Carl;

    The legs on the jetty are like an upside down V ( aka ^) and so you would have to be careful where you threw.

    The currents and eddies under there are very strong

    If your net touched a support leg - the entanglement would be fatal for the net I'd say - so much marine growth.

    Wind over the distance of the drop may also impact on your accuracy.

    High risk mate - but not impossible.

    My tip would be to not venture out so far. Most people seem to flock to the end.

    Try just behind the breakers - and toss some very light weighted Pippi on a 1/0 bait keeper hook - plenty of good whiting and bream around atm.

    Good luck!

    Brad. :-)
