Thread: Early Caribbean?

    Re: Early Caribbean?

Do u think the chines and strakes could have been added to the bare hull once it was removed from the mould? its possible i think and it wouldn't take to much effort if you've seen it done on alloy boats its just flat bar welded on all they would need to do is glass on a strip that is if we are talking about the flap bit that sticks out to the side of the chine

No, they were two piece moulds, there is a boat almost exactly the same at my local dealer, reverse chines were pretty common years ago.

Any closer to solving the puzzle? , seen one with the exact same window, and very similar top body. it was a carribean caprice.

    hi there,
newbie here, and great thread, just what I am looking for
just curious if you have found out any more info on this hull?
looking at a couple on gumtree and all they say is 5.5m Bertram, or the other is 5.5m Bertram/ Caribbean/Ambassador.
trying to do some research on the net to find out hull weights and year being made. the sellers have told me they are 80's models.

I noticed yours is on a single axel trailer so they cant be too bad for weight.

I have contacted Caribbean and they say it defiantly looks like one of theirs, but need more photos and the details of the manufacturing plate, hopefully its still on it. I will see on Saturday when I go to look at it.

    Re: Early Caribbean?

    Hi Steve.

Mine was pretty sad and needed an awful lot of work,
A Seafarer which needs about the same amount of work came up, so I bought it and sold the Caribbean, mainly because it came with a very good 150hp Black Max, and the boat was in way better condition; It's cabin was so sun burnt that it could not be repaired and the only thing to do with it was to cut the cabin off and center console it. Which I didn't really want or need. However my son did put his hand up for the 17' 1/2 cabin Seafarer, so I'm happy.

The photo you have posted shows a very nice looking boat, and it does appear exactly the same as mine.
Let us all know how the inspection goes and as always, PHOTOS!

OK so we went and looked at it today, unfortunately the Id tag was still there but totally unreadable. The guy had basically no info on the boat either, which doesn't help. So all I can do is put more photos up and hopefully someone will be able to help.
It's a shame as it's ax really good boat, but I think the weight would be pushing the Commy to it's limit on the limits.

It's only a signature 470f, maybe a little small but for me and the wife it should be OK. Needs cleaning up and I would like to put an underfloor fuel tank in (not sure where to get this done) and maybe down the track look at a newer donk on the back.
Would have loved the Berty though. Oh well maybe next one.

I thought we got a good buy, thinking about putting a newer motor on it, or am I just wasting money?

    Re: Early Caribbean?

if the motor's clean and reliable, just use it for a while and see if it does the job for you. depending on how often you use it, the fuel usage may not be to bad. then, if you think it's still too small as you mentioned, you can flip it without the expense of the re-power!
