Neighbour of mine soaks small strips of squid tubes in it and swears the whiting go into a feeding frenzy over it!
Seems you buy it from most chemists, Gavisvon make it for heartburn ..... Wonder if that is it?

Yeah, it used to be illegal, don't know now though, my mate used to use Anniseed for Snapper, seemed to work OK.
I thought it was only a rumor, plus, who is going to police it....lol...and its used in commercial bought fish berley too.
Some competitions i believe use to ban it, to try and keep the sport as pure as possible.
Try WD40...dosent smell as good as as aniseed tho.
Illegal in fresh waters because it taints the fresh water supply...has been for over 50 years.
Pure aniseed oil is fairly toxic so I suggest you gut the fish if they have swallowed your baits.

I used to use it for Mullaway, Herring and Garfish fishing in W.A. worked well. Mixed some with the burley for the last two and put a little in the pilchard bag for the Mullaway.
It is not illegal to use Aniseed in marine waters.
It would be like fishing with Black Jellybeans for bait.
