    Mackerel Monday

Hi all hope your weekend fishing went well - the conditions were certainly fantastic - just what we like for winter. I headed out on Monday between school drop off and pickup with a mate really just to have some time on the water as he needed a "vitamin sea" fix.

Conditions were not supposed to be that great for fishing so expectations were low as we headed out around 0930 to have a hunt around. Whilst searching for some bait I threw out an unweighted squid strip and after a couple of minutes was onto a fast swimming fish which turned out to be a nice Spotted Mackeral and this was quickly followed by a Bonito that would be turned into bait.

Pushing a bit wider we found massive Herring schools and as the Sabiki continued to be stripped of hooks and baits we soon came to the conclusion that there were quite a few Mackeral around.

Livies were deployed on lightly weighted gang hooks and soon resulted in some blistering runs and a couple of solid Spotted Mackeral onboard. The sounder showed they were sitting about 3-4 meters above the bait schools so we adjusted our sinker weights and were soon onto a couple more great runs and just as many lost fish to bite offs as we were only fishing light leader.

A couple of bonus Snapper also came onboard making the end tally 6 Spotted Mackeral between 63-85cms and two Snapper 39 and 41 cms. It was a welcome surprise to get onto some late season Mackeral though water temperatures were still 23 or so where we were fishing.

Smooth run back and back in time for school pickup. Friends and family all supplied with some great fresh fish.

Sorry, no pictures this time as we were having too much fun fishing!
