yep good move Dave. An extra 10psi doesn't sound like much but it can make a lot of difference and help keep temps down. Don't forget this is the cold tyre pressure too.

Yes would be interesting to hear back down the track if you still have problems. Your tow ball weight is certainly on the high (very) side, but as you have the truck to handle it, and if you solve the tyre reliability issues, will save you a lot of pain if you don't have to move axles.
    Cheers & good luck.

If your rear axle is not carrying as much weight as the front, you might be able to invert your towbar tongue and raise the towball 3 inches.
It may level out the trailer and stop the scrubbing on the rear axle causing the blowouts.

I would really be looking at moving the boat back as far as you can and see how that goes.
Cut the winch post off, weld a base plate to it and U bolt it back onto the drawbar is probably the cheapest option.

Is it worse heading to the ramp or coming home? Could be a fuel tank location that is giving you dramas while towing.

definitely run 65 PSI, low pressure is the biggest killer of loaded trailer tryres

I'd go 16" wheels with quality LT tyres. Sounds like your tyres are delaminating from excessive heat caused by weight and tyre size. 60psi min.

    Re: Trailer and tyre issues

My dual axle 3.5T trailer has Kings Tyres in the LT245/75R16 size, with a 120/116Q rating 1380Kg single and 1260Kg dual and mine haven't given me any problems when I was towing the boat. I used to run them at 45-50PSI, any more and in my opinion the trailer felt the bumps/potholes in the road too much, bearing in mind that the pressure increases by about 5PSI as the tyre warms up, my tyres are rated to 80PSI max. On the highway running at 85-95km/hour for hours on end only got mine just warm, about the same as the tow vehicles tyres, so no dramas with the pressure. I would also be checking the wheel alignment on your setup.

Can't say that I have heard of your tyre brand before so don't know if they are any good or not, but I would be changing brands for sure.

I also had difficulty when I first put my boat on the trailer, it had too much weight on the tow ball and the rig would sway badly at speed, which was quite unnerving to say the least, a bit of experimenting and I ended moving the boat back on the trailer to reduce the tow ball weight which then fixed the trailer sway. I eventually replaced the front winch with a much heavier winch and had to do it again because of the extra weight. Also the position of the fuel tanks would also play into the problem as unless the tank is directly over the axles, it will change the balance if you were towing with a full or empty tank. With mine, the tank holds about 340L which would equate to about the same numbers in Kg weight, so if your tank is not directly over the axle setup, the weight or lack off will affect the tow ball weight.

Repositioning the winch post on the trailer shouldn't be too hard too do, and certainly easier then replacing the axles and/or moving them. As Tunatiser said, it is easier and much cheaper to cut off the winch post, weld a base plate to it and just reposition it towards the back a bit, towards the front of the boat if you move the boat back a bit on the trailer. Adding an extra axle set may also put your rig over the 3.5T limit, two extra wheels , tyres, springs, axle, brakes etc., would probably add about 150Kg+ weight to the trailer, which may mean that your tow vehicle may not be legally able to tow it, plus you will have to get an engineer to certify the trailer modification and you may also need different size brakes etc. It would probably open up a can of worms to go down that route.

    Just my 2c worth.

    Hi Dave,

Other than the tyres & weight issues, have you have any issues with the braking system cos I had the same Trojan system & ended up removing the stubs & putting on 2.0t ford, using the trojan SS calipers.

    Cheers

    Hi Neil,

I've never had any issues with the brakes.

    Thanks,
    Dave.
