    New springs?

    IMG_2777.jpg

Do these springs need replacing? I had a sizzling hot wheel coming back from ramp the other day, brake pads down to bare metal, checked bearings while at it and some surface rust so have decided I might as go the whole hog and replace all brake pads and bearings, the jobs getting bigger than I wanted it too but might as well get it out of the way.....do I need to do spings as well???

    Re: New springs?

I wouldn't bother replacing them they just need a clean up.

    Re: New springs?

You will probably find that they are shagged under the U bolts and plate, they are pretty cheap, but try to get good Aussie made springs, not the cheap galvanised ones at the auto stores, they are real shit!

OH, and don't even try to undo any nuts, just cut everything off with a grinder and replace it.

Yeah I wouldn't bother replacing them. Surface rust like that is ok. If you want clean them up a bit and hit them with a load of fish oil. Should slow it down a little bit.

    Re: New springs?

Thanks for the replies Gents, have decided to leave the springs for now, already up for new tyres ($600) new brake pads ($80), all four wheels were down to the metal! & new bearings (??) and so far over $150 worth of consumables.

So cheap bearing protectors used I think (They are very light weight and have no brand on them), 2 had leaked through the front end and 3 had rear seals blown out so glad I checked them as only a amtter of time! Given the amount of grease on the hubs I think the previous onwners MO was to pump a heap of grease in on a regualr basis as there was about a cupful in each hub (Outside the bearings)

Haven' t had this boat long and made the mistake of thnking the previous owner would have been all over these things since he is some kind of engineer, don;t make assumptions I guess.

Glad its blowing its arse off this WE as I will be in the workshop trying to remove 8 bearing cones - oh the JOY!

Oh joy another bearing buddy thread.

I don't want a noelm rep (jk) but if you do a little research on bearing buddies they are designed to work with the hubs completely full of grease.

I want to know how you push a round hole over a square axle to blow a seal?

    Re: New springs?

Glad I can further your knowledge as I've noticed over the years it is lacking in some areas, if you read my post you would see that I mention the previous owner pumped grease into the hubs which blows out the back seal if you over do it, hope this helps.

    Re: New springs?

So what happens Crunchy, does the outer rim of the seal 'blow out' while leaving the inner part held in position by the square axle?

You'd think the BB spring would be fully compressed & binding before that would happen.

Glad I can further your knowledge as I've noticed over the years it is lacking in some areas,
    Watch out for the 'rep'.

    Re: New springs?

well theres no actual expolosion, more of a fffsssst as grease escapes through the seal

    Re: New springs?

So were they leaking a little or were the seals blown out?
All moving seals leak under pressure.
If they don't leak some grease then something's not right.

    Re: New springs?

I think I once got a "proper" seal from a bearing place that fitted the hub and axle diameter, never had a bit of trouble once I fitted them, I never really liked that silly idea that comes standard in bearing kits.

    Re: New springs?

Mate with bearing bearing buddies r not the way to go as most boat owner will pump more grease thinking more is better, when in fact more is not good. U never get the water contaminated grease out all u do is blow the rear seal.
What I do is change the wheel bearings every 12 months whether they need to be changed or not. I travel from Bris to tin can bay regularly no problems.

    Re: New springs?

Just changed mine out to Durahubs. All 4 had water ingress with no name bearing buddies supplied new on a Mackay trailer.
At least you can see what's going on with the Dura hubs.
