Do these springs need replacing? I had a sizzling hot wheel coming back from ramp the other day, brake pads down to bare metal, checked bearings while at it and some surface rust so have decided I might as go the whole hog and replace all brake pads and bearings, the jobs getting bigger than I wanted it too but might as well get it out of the way.....do I need to do spings as well???
You will probably find that they are shagged under the U bolts and plate, they are pretty cheap, but try to get good Aussie made springs, not the cheap galvanised ones at the auto stores, they are real shit!
Yeah I wouldn't bother replacing them. Surface rust like that is ok. If you want clean them up a bit and hit them with a load of fish oil. Should slow it down a little bit.
Thanks for the replies Gents, have decided to leave the springs for now, already up for new tyres ($600) new brake pads ($80), all four wheels were down to the metal! & new bearings (??) and so far over $150 worth of consumables.
So cheap bearing protectors used I think (They are very light weight and have no brand on them), 2 had leaked through the front end and 3 had rear seals blown out so glad I checked them as only a amtter of time! Given the amount of grease on the hubs I think the previous onwners MO was to pump a heap of grease in on a regualr basis as there was about a cupful in each hub (Outside the bearings)
Haven' t had this boat long and made the mistake of thnking the previous owner would have been all over these things since he is some kind of engineer, don;t make assumptions I guess.
Glad its blowing its arse off this WE as I will be in the workshop trying to remove 8 bearing cones - oh the JOY!
Glad I can further your knowledge as I've noticed over the years it is lacking in some areas, if you read my post you would see that I mention the previous owner pumped grease into the hubs which blows out the back seal if you over do it, hope this helps.
So were they leaking a little or were the seals blown out?
All moving seals leak under pressure.
If they don't leak some grease then something's not right.
I think I once got a "proper" seal from a bearing place that fitted the hub and axle diameter, never had a bit of trouble once I fitted them, I never really liked that silly idea that comes standard in bearing kits.
Mate with bearing bearing buddies r not the way to go as most boat owner will pump more grease thinking more is better, when in fact more is not good. U never get the water contaminated grease out all u do is blow the rear seal.
What I do is change the wheel bearings every 12 months whether they need to be changed or not. I travel from Bris to tin can bay regularly no problems.
Just changed mine out to Durahubs. All 4 had water ingress with no name bearing buddies supplied new on a Mackay trailer.
At least you can see what's going on with the Dura hubs.
