    In regards to Radar....

Shit the new 4G broadband radars are bloody good. I had a conventional Raymarine radar on my previous platey and I liked it but jeepers the new ones kill it.

Where I would previously struggle to pick up a guy in a small fibreglass boat (not much metal to reflect) now the new one clearly picks up guys on their kayak (no metal?). Fantastic for night navigation when you have a glass windscreen and also when coming home into the sunset whereby you can clearly pick up small marker buoys and navigation posts etc in the rough well before you are right on top of them.

Its not really optimistic, taking the advice of the person who built the boat. It might be over 2 tonne with the weight of the batteries which I forgot about. It doesn't really bother me. I won't be taking it to a weigh bridge to find out. If i did somehow find out it was over 2T I wouldn't be spending thousands on an electronic breakaway system anyway.

At the end of the day there would be loads of smaller glass boats that would be over 2 tonne when the family go on holidays and load the boat up with all their food and drinks and bikes and stove and camping gear and suitcases and what have you. Its not really a big deal to me.

Scottar's advice is sound, your's optimistic which is never the way to go when talking legalities.

When I brought a 6.1m plate boat on a 2T trailer I knew she was under dry via weigh bridge but would be over wet n loaded
First thing I did on that rig was upgrade the brakes
My reason - can you imagine not being able to stop and running over a child if you knew it was to close or over the brake limit?
I could afford the boat so I could afford the brakes
Some of the trailers you see are just plain unsafe and ppl don't realise how much 5T combined can take to stop when you need to in a hurray
    Cheers
    Craig

It will be a major deal if you manage to get into a prang one day and do serious damage or worse still kill someone - Your funeral - hopefully not literally. As for not fitting the brakes - when DOT pull the plates off it for being unroadworthy, pretty confident you will fit the brakes. Best hope the scaley's never pull you up.

thats fair enough Craig. personal choice really. I understand what you say about running over a child, I just dont get too concerned about those scenarios because you could come up with any number of reasons why that could happen. You could argue to replace your tires 10,000km early to make sure you have the best braking performance, or change your brake fluid every 2 years on the dot, or replace all your brake lines every couple of years to make sure you have the braking performance to not hit a child. Its admirable that you upgraded your brakes for that purpose. I just dont get too worried about that, as there are dozens of reasons or scenarios you could come up with. I service my car and boat and trailer on schedule, i tow it safely and when I originally bought the boat it was under 2T, which is good enough for me. I have added a stainless bimini and a couple of other things, so now It might be over 2T, but that doesnt really worry me, and I dont plan to add electric breaks and a breakawy system because my boat is 50-100kg over 2 tonne. but its personal preference really.

You would have a heart attack if you saw my fire wood trailer. it is about 400kg empty and +1700kg when full of wood. It has no brakes at all.

Seen that boat the other week at Keith's BigE.
Should've splurged that little more and put the new 200hp lean burn on it...
    Nice boat by the way.

    850kg boat
    450kg trailer (as per plate)
200kg fuel + the weight of the tank
220kg outboard with oil and prop
    50kg batteries
    30kg stainless targa
50kg seats, bunk cushions, (empty) eskies
    20kg anchor and chain
10kg cables and steering and wiring
    20kg safety gear
    10kg stainless hardware

1910kg total. I am being a bit conservative in my calcs there as I doubt my targa weighs 30kg, my safety gear wouldn't be 20kg, my empty eskies and seats wouldnt be 50kg, I carry all my fishing equipment in the car too, and this is assuming the fuel tank is 100% full.

boat sales review of the 615 (previous model, same hull) put the tow weight at 1700kg, which is pretty optimistic however, but a long way off 2T.

These figures are not 100% accurate of course (as I have probably forgot some things), but its close enough for me to not have to worry about it.

I do a lot of fishing alone or with only 1 other person. I am the boat driver, so I guess I could take 2 beers with me. that will add 1kg

If the weights are right - all good. Mayfairs website has the tare weight of the trailer that looks like the one under BigE's new toy at a tare of 590/600 kgs - bit of a discrepancy there. Stainless takes in the bow rail as well if it is an option and not included in the hull weight.

I wasn't worried about mine either until I put it on the weigh bridge
Only way you'll know what the whole rig weighs.
You may be surprised. Maybe it's better not to know. That way you won't have a guilty conscious every time you drive down the road.
I ended up with a Chev as I didn't like the thought of loosing everything I worked hard for and getting rapped in jail.
Plus your insurance will be void. May as well not pay the insurance.
