I'm going to shout myself an early Christmas pressie and purchase an anchor winch.
I'm only looking at drum style winches and am looking for some feedback on what you have on your rigs?
The main uses I want the winch for is family boating around the bay and rare times when I anchor in water approx 40 meters( mainly drift fish with parachute).

I've got a lone star gx2 and had no problems with it. Installed it with myself and 1 helper to position the drum mount. Got to match up your anchor and bow Sprit as well.

Lonestar build a great winch, can't go wrong.
Honestly this is my first winch so I've got nothing to compare it to.
My old dad has an earlier model lone star and he reckons mine is a lot faster.
I do have to be careful when retrieving as the anchor lands into the bow Sprit it can be a bit clumsy because it's quick. But I've just been stopping just short of anchor lock up and plugging the retrieve switch to increment it into position.
I hope I'm not making it sound hard. It isn't.
It's so much better than my old half cab - trying to squeeze through that flip out cab window to access the anchor.
Then hauling it up.
Glad I don't need to do that any more.

I have a stress free midi 1400, I think it is, you do need both batteries to drive it if your in 40 metres, once the anchor has lifted it is very fast, I also have the free fall model. For what you want stay with 8mm braided rode, even then you may haven't to change your bow rollers, if they're blue plastic etc the braid will cut into them especially the 6 mm I use. Do a search here as this subject has had quite a bashing in the last 12 months or so and many members may not bother going over old ground again. I'd search for you but I usually use the wrong search criteria plus I struggle on the phone (on a cruise ship at the moment) plus imbibing some well earned amber fluid.

I have a stress free midi winch with free fall. Its been good, except I managed to bend the backing plate by trying to pick up half of Hutchinsons reef one day .
Anyway stress free fixed it and up graded the backing plate for the cost of postage so I cant complain about the after sales service
The free fall is a great feature that eliminates over run and makes paying out a bit more line very easy. I have roughly 90 m of rope and about 8m of chain on mine and anchoring in 50-60 m is fine in decent conditions . A lot of the fishing I do is trolling but when I do anchor in the bay or over a reef its been great .
I dont think you will regret spending the money on most of the mainstream winches , it would be a tos up between the winch and trim tabs for best bit of coin I have spent on the boat.

Muir DFF08, freefall works a treat on our Victory. Have 100m rope + 8m chain on it. Happy with it so far, had it for a bit over a year, definitely worth it!
Mine is on the way as we speak.
HRC6FF fitted last time I was home. All holes drilled in foredeck were slightly oversize to allow for epoxy coating to seal the timber core, which was in perfect condition. Chain stopper and horn cleat added, plus fairleads for keeping handling/mooring lines away from the bow roller. Not wired yet, doing that when I am home for Xmas, and 12mm 8-strand plait should arrive about then.

To finish off this thread and to give some feedback as well.
I ended up going with a viper 1000 winch with 8mm rope and 6mm short link chain.
The winch is fantastic, fast and pleanty of grunt.
It has made family boating with the wife and kids a breeze, it even gave the wife confidence to drop anchor around other boats at tangalooma all by herself.
Only regret is i didnt fit one sooner!!
