Thread: Transducer height non-planing boat...?

    Question Transducer height non-planing boat...?

Is it BS that you can shoot though aluminium hulls? Have read people saying it's worked for them and others saying no way will never work.
I have a wet mount shoot though in my kayak that works flawlessly, and would have been awesome to adapt the same install method in the punt.
The 3m punt is electric only powered, so want the ducer mounted where it won't get damaged as I drag the punt with retractable wheels so can't mount it the traditional way. Also, where I usually fish, the motor is raised quite often to get over logs etc so don't want to rip the ducer off.
Am thinking as it never planes and the keel is always a good 100-150mm below the water line, I could just mount the ducer higher up on the transom, above the keel up out of the way from any possible damage, Anyone done this?
Another ideas was to have a U shaped piece of thick aluminium bar that wrapped out and around the ducer and say only 10mm below the bottom edge of the ducer so as not to intefere with the signal, am open to any ideas !
The sounder I'm using is a Lowrance Elite 4X chirp.

Will they "work" - on a thin hull, yes. Will the signal be very heavily attenuated - yes. Will it work a heap better over the back like the manufacturer specified - you bet. You may well get away with mounting it higher up the transom but if it is electric power only, personally I would look into a suction cup mount so you don't need to drill any holes what so ever and can move it at will. I used to run one with a 6 hp outboard that would plane so pretty confident you would be right.

I really want it just permanently mounted...

Then just go for a quick run and hold the transducer against the back of the hull where you are happy to mount it. You will soon see if the picture is being degraded by turbulence. You could also throw a bucket of water in the bilge and sit the transducer in it to see just how well it does or doesn't work shooting through the tin.

yeah might just do that, see what happens then go from there...

Put plenty of transducers inside the hull on Tinys, all worked very well !!

the key is preparation and neutral cure silicon in a big blob with no air bubbles

    Awesome!
thats a popular way for mounting them in kayaks too, good to hear it also works in tinnys !

I was thinking of mounting how I have done mine in my kayak, which is a wet mount. Basically a sealed plastic container with the bottom cut out leaving a 10mm lip, stuck to the bottom of kayak and filled with water so there's absolutely no chance of bubbles that can occur with the silicone method, only problem is being a tinny, having it permanently filled with water may be setup for corrosion? even being fresh water used to fill it, dunno may be being a little paranoid... Have heard of people using baby oil as a medium instead of water, so they don't have problems with algae growing.... Pics below of how I've mounted the ducer in my yak... Reckon it would go ok in a tinny in regards to corrosion using water? I could use distilled water I guess, so it's as pure a can be... and use a coloured sealable container to stop any sunlight getting to it....
