Re: best of the best outboards

I'm a huge fan of 2 stroke motors.
simple design and perfect for outboards in their operation range.

I owned a fitch 175 which was a nice motor. much better performance from a 2 stroke or 4 stroke in terms of holeshot, running speeds IMO. with the added benefit 2 stokes can run at WOT all day long.

2 strokes are a better option on smaller boats I think. small 4 strokes tend to be a bit doey.

I would happily own a large 2 stroke if the oil cost wasn't ludicrous. that's the biggest reason id never own one again. above 2000rpm they use 50:1 which costs a fortune if your a big offshore user.

but the biggest advantage of 4 strokes are engine hours. if your a heavy user they are good for at least twice as many hours.

I think its horses for courses when it comes to motor selection. get what suits your usage the best.

spoke to my mechanic a while ago about this topic, he said that gone are they days that Yamaha are ahead of the game and all the big companies are pretty much on par now, he fixes as many yammies as any other brand so he doesn't recommend any of them above the others anymore.

I have a "white anchor" etec hahaha, never had a drama with it, it's been the best motor I've owned, it doesn't have the fuel economy of a 4-stroke but far better than my old yammie 85hp 2-stroke which gave me constant troubles, guess I just got a lemon and that's life.

    cheers.

No, it's the same, 3 years, plus the extra 2 if you jump through flaming hoops, just like Mercury with their 3 plus 3 equals 6year warranty (as the adds say) but you don't just get the 6 years, there is conditions, Honda have by far the best warranty.

OH, and Telwater don't cover the warranty, it covered by BRP, just like your car, the dealer doesn't carry the warranty, they just do the repairs and claim against the manufacturer, Telwater are just a kind of middle man setup.

thats what i thought nicko and the reason i started this thread and thats my belief that the big brand outboards are on par and youd have to be unlucky to get a bad engine and its just up to your preferences on which 1 has the options you personally want... if your mechanic is thinkin that also then maybe yamaha will bring there price down and even up the market if there not selling as many motors.. wont hold my breath but hey i can dream...

right on flex i am 2 stoke mad also thats why i rave on defending them ha ha .. and if it wasnt for oil cost i woul own a 2 stroke large outboard..except i would sacrifice a little hp for the quiet, smoother operation of a 4 stroke if i had extra hp to weight and could sacrifice...

    Hey Basser,

i was was disappointed to learn that those neat Merc options such as skyhook were only available in 250hp+ engines and also that the feature is worth 15k US! I can't imagine too many people would be willing to shell out that sort of coin for such a feature.

The guys in Florida don't seem to be too concerned about $. I don't think Australia is the target market.

I don't get how they can say no service required for five years and only warrant for three.

Re: best of the best outboards

The length of warranty has little to do with service intervals, mind you, I would think even though they state the long service time, the instructions would tell you it needs to be "checked" probably annually for routine simple things!

So yeah, the chart would reveal much.
Please enlighten me how horsepower to torque is a direct relationship i have heard this before on here but it runs against everything I have learned about motors
