What do you mean by "shame about the solver"?

The trick is going diesel lets you loose an engine in survey. 2x100hp 4 strokes come to around 360-380 kg depending on brand. Take out the second 30kg starter battery and you've saved at least 50kg at the back of the boat.

My apologies, you are correct. Also it is 557hp not 577hp.

Only a few more days and we get to see What BRP have been working on. How far down the tree will gen2 go?
Etec gen2 have got to be top of the tree just on an innovation and feature evolution.
Doesnt matter if you like etecs or not, they will force the others to catch up.

Is there enough water for all those props? Better to chain them up to a 50" prop no? This is what happens when you have too much money for your own good, lol.
Not what the initial post was supposed to get from us clowns, hehehe

I wonder if Subaru will throw a rotary engine onto a leg?

Also amazes me that outboard manufacturers have not introduced a two or three speed gearbox yet for outboards?
Could be mounted immediately under the engine and shorten the drive shaft in the leg.
Would give you the option of better hole shot when heavily loaded or better economy running fast when lightly loaded.

You meant Mazda not Subaru right? Rotary engines are generally low on torque for the given HP from memory so marine applications wouldn't be a strong point.

with the way automatics have advanced lately I am also surprised they haven't managed it for outboards.

I suspect that the primary reason it hasn't happened is that it simply isn't needed. A propeller, unlike the tyres on a car, will slip. In short this means that the extra complexity, cost and weight that a car requires to get it moving, just isn't a requirement - just another point of potential failure. There are some shaft drive boxes that utilize multi ratio transmissions with the most common reason being to allow slow speed operation. There is also a bit more going on in that section of the leg than just a drive shaft too.

You mean a boxer engine tuna, and that might be a little difficult to get the cowl to look nice... although at least it would be/look different [emoji4].

I don't see the need (maybe except for towing/lower speed & high loading applications), and as the boys have mentioned, would be pretty impractical not to mention adding weight and complexity.

A gear box to 'speed up' on flat calm days would be no good either - unless you had some 'hidden' HP to achieve that extra speed. Again, more weight and a height increase in CoG for the outboard - which wouldn't be wanted either.

Stick with the current CVT transmissions on outboards I reckon... i.e. the prop [emoji1].

I could see an application for the boxer diesels in ster drive applications.

As for gearboxes. What about like a tapered gear that allows higher rpm at the prop as resistance reduces once the boat is on he plane?
