Help! Seized Zips on Boat Clears

Anyone any ideas on how to free up a zip on a boat clear that has seized up after years of being on the boat? I've tried soap, washing and scrubing, WD40, inox and Shelly's EZY Glide but no joy. Infuriating. Felt like gripping it with a pair of pliers and ripping the whole damn thing off. Thanks.

Try boiling water, it usually works a treat.

Thanks, looks like I may have to beg, borrow or steal one of those steam duck thingies. Hot water's no go as it's right up against my t-top.

Steam followed by spraying with a silicone spray, grab the raised ridge on the zipper with a pair of pliers and just work it back and forward, might take 2 or 3 applications of steam and silicone but will work. Once you have it free you will need to give the inside the zipper a good clean, thereafter I applied silicone spray to every zip after washing and work t back and forwards a couple of times to work it in.

I used a toothbrush in a cup of boiling water for the zips in hard to get spots above and it's done the job.

Salt will ruin any zip, the big plastic ones seem to fair better but if the bit that does the zipping is made from aluminum it is a race that is easily lost. I left my clears on for two trips without spraying them and got caught out as there was quite a bit of time between them due to weather and other unforseen circumstances, wish someone would come up with a solution.

Hot tip is this gear called Yeild. Comes in a gold coloured can. I've seen it undo the most ordinary rusted nuts and bolts ever. But pricey but probably cheaper than new zips. If your round Bribie way I'll give you a bit.

    Cheers daz

I also have it and it is great on anything ferrous, tried it on zippers but didn't work for me, maybe I didn't persevere enough but pretty sure aluminium oxide is not one of the things it clears.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've just invested in a Vax Grime Pro steam cleaner. If it doesn't work on my zips at least we'll have a clean bathroom and kitchen, at least that's how I justify it anyway. To digress, I used Vuplex for the first time on my clears and I can safely say all the stuff you see on the ads are BS. It does nothing to rejuvenate or restore old clears, let alone perspex. All it does is remove dirt which can be removed by soap anyway. I suppose if the clears are new, it will protect it and makes it easier to clean just like RainX does for glass. Very disappointed.

Carefully cut the old zip off using sidecutters then replace it with a "fixnzip". Google the name and see what you reckon. I replaced 4 of the zips on my clears with this product and I'm very happy with the result. Only problem is you'll have to wait for postage from USA but well worth it i I reckon

Try Selleys "Ezy Glide", works well on coat and tent zips, never tried it on the clears zips though.
