    Hervey Bay suggestions

    Hi all,
I am going to Urangan for a week and taking my little tinnie. I will be fishing some land based and some tinnie fishing, I prefer to use bait and would like some guidance to places to pump yabbies so any help appreciated. I will be having a go at Urangan Pier, around the boat harbour rock wall, and perhaps Burrum River in the tinnie. Never been to the area before so will be interesting.
    Thanks in advance
    Pete

Not sure when you are going mate but you can pump Yabbies beside the seafood Co-op we are getting up to 6 per hole atm. If the Winter Whiting are still about put in at Gattakers ramp don't have to go very far out, we have to stop fishing for them now as we have our bag limit of 50 per person.

    Re: Hervey Bay suggestions

Last time I pumped bait up there (few years back now) was on the banks south of the boat harbour. Pretty hard work for little return compared to pumping yabbies in the Brisbane /Gold Coast region. We were land based off the pier predominantly. I didn't get one personally but the locals were getting a few good Goldens and the odd mack off the jetty on live herring.

Been a while since I was there but have family up there, yabbies are either round to the right from the boat harbour or there were some down out the front of scarness/torquay.

If you go chasing winter whiting out the front of Gattakers there are often schools of longfin come past there aswell plus around the headland there are bits of broken ground everywhere that produce cod, blackall and have been told jacks and sweetlip at times.

    Re: Hervey Bay suggestions

All the above advice is good.
Gatakers at Pt Vernon is good if the wind gets up from the SE, it is very protected.
Not much else but whiting at this time of year.
I prefer to drive to River Heads or Burrum Heads for putting a tinnie in and making a day of it. Much bigger fish at these 2 spots.

Get the map from Burrum Heads Traders store , it has all the sandbanks marked. You will need it.

    Re: Hervey Bay suggestions

The Arti reef fishes well for mixed species including jew and snapper, but also plenty of sharks. The main trick with the Arti is getting used to the huge current. The published marks in local handbooks and websites are fine, but you need to be right on the spot. That can mean anchoring several times to get it right, and changing sinker lead often. Avge depth is 55-60ft, so allow for the angle of your line in the current. Once you get it right, you should get bites almost immediatley. Best around tide changes, and almost pointless in between the changes.

You can also hug Fraser Island and go further up the bay in search of tuna schools, just look for the birds.
