connecting multipul units

hi all just after some info on connectivity in the boat at the moment I have a garmin 751xs connected to nmea. using a Ethernet cable connected a garmin 70dv so i could view the chirp on the screen....system works a treat but i would like to get a bigger screen 7410xsv

Is it possible to connect this to my current config by nmea or was it only possible to have 2 units connected at the same time..I did not want to remove the two 7 inch screens in the dash as they are flush mounted and the hole will be bigger than the new head unit.

A 7410 will network to the 751 through an Ethernet cable, you wont get full intergration but its pretty close. You wont want to look at the 751 once you put the 7410 in

you can hook as many units into the nmea 2000 as you like as most only send standard gps data and read standard NMEA 2000 data

yea mate the 751xs and 70dv already work of the same tranny through ethernet connection ..
i want all 3 to be able to work of the same transducer but all be connected so as to when i mark a way point it comes up on all 3 units or so i can run 1 screen on maps another on sounder and another on sounder/map
or is this just wishfull thinking

ethernet is high data transfer "broadband" and NMEA2000 is a universal protocol canbus like LOW data transfer.
think of it like this

ethernet = high pressure water pipe line

nmea = ...garden hose.. both deliver data.. just, one more than the other

but they both do different jobs

to join all three units together via Ethernet you will need a switch or "hub" garmin make a very good one , or you can cheap out and use a RJ45 cat5 style hub from jbhifi but i wouldnt recomend that

Ethernet is basically what a computer network utilizes. You aren't running "two sounders off one transducer" so much as making a high speed data (video sort of) connection so the echoes from the unit with the transducer connected can be displayed on the other display. To do this your unit has to be capable of firstly the connection, and then second - have the software capability to run what you want to. Not all units do. You are limited to sticking with the one brand if this is something you wish to do ( can't run a Garmin display off a Furuno sounder module as an example).

The "hub" comes into it if you do not have the necessary number of ethernet connections on the back of the unit to connect everything. Some brands/models have multiple ports and function as a hub themselves - others simply have one port. With a single port unit, to connect more than one other device and thus create a "network", a hub is required. If all you wish to do is join two displays that have one port each, it is not.

One thing to keep in mind when using a heap of ethernet connections on a boat if you love a bit of radio chatter - they can create enough radio interference to make a VHF unusable. If your vessel suffers from this, there is the possibility the only way to use your radio will be to shut down your electronics network.

thanks people i have heard about it playing around with the communications i might connect a 7410xsv via ethernet to the 751xs and just have the 70dv for mapping connected to nmea that sould work lol

Unfortunately the low end sounder/GPS units do not have Ethernet ports or NMEA 2000 ports. so be careful quoting what unit will communicate with what unit. the other underlying problem is different software will not allow communication in some instances

hope ya don't mind if I hijack you're thread....
I've got a hds5 and a hds5x both were hooked together using ethernet and nmea. both units were working sweet. now with the 5 on chart screen I try and mark a spot on the 5x on sounder screen and it won't drop a way point on the chart????
is this the ethernet or nmea playing up? (which cable shares this kind of data)
