no sun under cover and its on the inside of the wheel. the wheel still has passed strickers and painted spots on tyre from new.

Looks like the typical steel belt gone rusty and falling to bits, is it a cheap rubbish tyre? A tyre service owner told me some time ago, that for boat trailers, look for a tyre that does not have a steel belt, he said as soon as you get a small nick from a stone, salt water just buggers up the belt, and it just disintegrates.

How old is the tyre ( IE what is the manufacture date if it is more than 5 years old it is past its use by date? )

there are not to many tyres you need 60psi in that seems alot even my light truck tyres only run at 45psi..

I cant agree with that, tyre pressures should be set relative to the weight being carried, and its much better to over-inflate a bit than it is to under-inflate.

As a rough guide to what pressures to run, it the tyre is rated to carry x kg at 65psi, and its share of the total load is 80% of x kgs, then run it at least at 80% of 65 psi (eg 52 and then round up to 55)

And yes, any tyre older than 5 years is best replaced, especially if youre going to be trailing any significant distance or at greater than 60kmph speeds. Check the age code on the sidewall, and look it up.

I blew one (a Toyo) out just like in the OP's photo, on a highway run, and age was the culprit there too. Lesson learnt. The Kyote's arent a bad cheapo tyre, but are far from premium quality. I now stick to the big brands, currently running Continental LT tyres. Have also used Yokohama on previous trailer and they were great.

Dave, the other thing with trailer tyres is that they sit in one position far too long, which creates a flat spot. Then we drag them out and with a heavy load, zoom off down the road, and expect the tyres to respond to that, and of course, they dont like it. Rubber and steel belts get a set in them and then the deterioration process is greatly accelerated.

I would replace all 4 tyres if one has failed like that. Looking for trouble otherwise. At least jack them up and spin them, i bet you see others with tread lifting in the centre.

Oh, and run the whole rig over a weighbridge (local tip) and find out what it REALLY weighs - you might get a surprise! If you dont at least you can then be confident about running the correct tyre pressures.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

That doesn't look right, not seen one with a belt sticking out that looks like that, that looks like old grandads beard. The tyre also looks a bit narrow for the rim. The tread also looks a different colour to the sidewall, it isn't a retread is it?

Either way, time for newbies all around I reckon.

What do you look for on a tyre to tell its age. How is the tyre labelled?
