Dad reckons fishing is 10% brains and 95% muscle, the rest is just good luck.
Not had any issued with jet ski's personally, Ski boats on the other hand give me the shits. Huge group clogging up the ramp loading everything bar the kitchen sink onto the thing with the trailer had in the water. Usually takes the idiots 20 minutes to launch it followed by another half hour chewing the fat before they take off. Then again i've suffered similar weight times while the old boys struggle to line up and load their bar crushers. Its not the craft it's the idiots that drive em, and idiots tend to exist in all marine pursuits. Although they seem most attracted to ski boats.
My general rule of thumb round these parts is the more expensive and flash the toy the less knowledge and respect inherent in the owner. usually because the boys able to buy these super flash toys don't get the time to use them and as a result don't pick up the unspoken rules and courtesy of those guys out there come rain or shine in there beat up old work horses. Also jobs that pay a certain wage usually require people to act in a certain way, a way not considered polite on the water ;-)
Yeah but ive had some blokes in big money pure fishing rigs behave as if they own the district. I suppose that still fits Airlock's point.
People suck.
Interestingly enough the local boat/pwc licence tester here also owns a boat yard and he sells lots of jet skis to unlicensed people, they are not interested in getting one so how in hell would they know the rules. I see many responsible jet ski operators but the irresponsible ones are often in a majority. The number of times I've been buzzed too close for comfort while well away from the channel is ridiculous, only the other day had two turn short at the end of Bells Creek to go past us while we were flicking for flatties in the shallows. The other issue is that a lot of them take off at high speed from the ramp, mind you some local boaties can be just as bad.
Just talking about them standing around chatting and getting in the way a few weeks ago at Batemans Bay some of us observed the same scene. Was all worth while though as we watched a jet ski slowly drifting away from the beach and out into the river. Enjoy your ciggie mate...and your swim.
I can't say I've seen a problem at deep water bend other than they sometimes occupy the pontoon for a while but so do some boats
Tick tock, tick tock until someone gets killed down the passage by a jet ski.
Well I just hate most boats or jetskies when I am on my kayak.. They always want to try give me big waves going past me.. like they are trying to tip me over.
I was on brisbane river up near the mouth the on tuesday in the morning and most the boats going out to mud island were ok, like when they came close to me they slowed down..
But maybe 4-5 boats came close to me and went fast to create waves.. And I wasn't even in the main channel I was near the oil rig. On the ramp I mainly go on the boat ramp but if there
is another way I will take that.. With rock walls no way I will take my $3000 kayak up a rock wall. And yes kayakers are as much as fishermen/women as boaties prob more so in some ways.
I goto a offshore kayak fishing comp each year at Adder rock and we all go out like 2-3km offshore or more and some the fish they catch is as good or better then a boat.. like this year one the guys
caught a marlin or even one the guys last year I think caught a 160cm Spanish mackerel.. and other fish with it. And as for just fishing around islands some guys catch as much fish as boaties.
And we got all the gear that you have.. I got a $1200 fishfinder and some ppl have better, we got all the good rods for flicking lures/sp's/bait fishing.. All the tackle to go with it, the only diff is you have a motor
and the boat is wider.. Like My kayak is 4.1m, some are 5.7m and some are smaller like the cheaper kayaks from dragon, bcf..etc that are 2.8m-4m.. But my point is some kayaks do have trailers. For me I go
to the ramp up the side and takes me about 30secs to put my wheels on and roll the kayak up the ramp and away from the boats. I have never had any boatie say Im in the way..Most greet me and check my kayak out
or talk to me.
So saying we aren't as good as you guys is silly.
I don't think the issue is weather or not a boat beats a kayak, its horses for courses really, and i agree you can often pull up better fish as you can troll a bait or lure at a slower pace witch the snapper seem to love! I think there's just some question as to who should or shouldn't be using a boat ramp legally, and who is taking the piss. unfortunately like every marine craft there are a fair number of toss pots who take over the entire ramp for their own personal use. It just become much more obvious when the person blocking the ramp has a a smaller craft, the smaller the craft the more ridiculous the situation and more likely people are to get up in arms about it. However in the case of noosa, if there is a sand ramp less then a KM up the road its not considered good manners to insist on using a tarmac ramp with limited parking when others have no other choice.
Well I get say jet skies argue cause they are wider and need trailers. However kayaks are allot thinner and can just go up the side of boats.
Unless there was like 20 or so kayakers on a meet and all came in at the same time it would be somewhat annoying for boats but I have seen some jet skies come in
like seahorse is saying and just sit around at the ramp holding up traffic.
There are clowns in all camps unfortunately. Ultimately though I think the general thoughts are that boat ramps and their associated pontoons and beaches are not the place for
- meet and greets
- performing maintenance when a motor fails to start
- parking to perform pre trip or post trip rigging - use the rigging area. If you don't use a trailer - find a way to wheel your rig to the water from the carpark.
- leaving your dinghy unattended and in the way on the pontoon if you live aboard (personal pet hate at Victoria Point Grrrrr) while you pop down the shops
- Swimming
- Fishing - if you hold the attitude that you shouldn't have to retrieve when a boat approaches.
- Water sports take off and drop off
- learning to reverse a trailer - on the busy days at least
- Sure I've probably forgotten a few - feel free to add them on.
I'm starting to think fisho's in general are an unfriendly lot, everybody hates everybody... maybe that's why we all get in a boat or whatever and get away from everyone else...ha
