Easy problem to solve on my Holley Carby - I hope!

Hi guys, with this crappy weather about I've been playing about with my old Ford V8 inboard and that included having the Holley 4 barrel CFM 600 completely overhauled at a staggering cost of $350.00!

So, motor starts and and runs well BUT, I have to prime it with a couple of teaspoons of fuel straight into the main jets under the choke valve every time!

Then it will run for ever and restart fine being warm and full of fuel!

I have been running this old girl for 20+ years and it has always needed priming to start but this had been done simply by 3 or 4 strokes of the throttle and you can then see the fuel spraying into the jets but when I try this now there is not a sign of fuel spray and it is bone dry inside???

The fact it runs AOK once it starts means the jets are all fine, the throttle linkage operates normally so why no fuel injection during the throttle priming action?

I can only assume it is a float orientated issue and the bowl is dry hence unable to prime via the throttles? I would have thought the service guy would have set the float level to factory default that should have at least allowed it to start up ..........

    Any ideas much appreciated!

    Thanks

Sounds like an accelerator pump issue.

You should get it running then turn it off then have a look down the carb and move the linkage to see if it squirts.

HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AT HAND

    Check float level.

There is a Sight Plug in the side of a Holley float bowl. It will be a brass or black 'Screw'.
    Take it out.
Fuel should just be barely be seeping out.

Adjust float level while engine is running.

There is a nut, with a screw in the top of it, very near the fuel line inlet.
The screw is the lock, the nut is the fuel level adjustment.
Loosen (Don't take out) the screw about 1 to 1-1/2 turns.
(If you remove the screw, fuel will gush out the screw hole.)

Turn the NUT clockwise (IN) to lower the fuel level.
Turn the NUT counter-clockwise (OUT) to lower your fuel level.
Hold the nut while you tighten the screw up to keep your adjustment.
(This must be done on both ends of every 4 barrel Holley.)

    Check accelerator plunger working.

Got TWO new ones ready within easy reach!

Good advice on adjusting the float, certainly saves me Googling everywhere trying to find it, many thanks!

I would have thought going back to who ever reco'd it first. There's something they've done that's not right. It should run and start fine after reco with only slight adjustments needed with tuning.
That's if he really knew what he was doing?

accelerator pump or the cam linkage that operates it, provided that there is fuel in the bowl before you go to start it

Sounds a bit like the fuel is draining back from the carby so there is no fuel for the accelerator pump to pump in to the throte

I guess that makes it easy to decide who doesn't get any more work from you next time you are looking for a mechanic......

What a knob carbies need a bit of playing around to get them running right especially after being pulled apart. Have you found anything with the suggestions so far.

Used to fix this problem with Holley's on cars by installing electric fuel pumps. They were chronic for loosing fuel out of the bowl, I assume by either by bleeding back in to the line or evaporation. Also characterised by the 30 second wind before the engine would kick. Probably 50% of the holley's I ran did it, got to the point where fitting a holley - first step was always the electric fuel pump.

    thank god for fuel injection.
