New to fly fishing, just North of Brisbane-wanting to learn how to start off.
Hi.I live about two hours drive north of Brisbane, and when like to look into getting involved in fly fishing.
So wondering how to go about starting off,as I know nothing and want to learn and then eventually look at
buying some kit.
Any suggestions of getting started towards getting involved in fly fishing would be appreciated.
thanks.

Two easy targets to learn with are flathead and gar fish.
I would be looking at 6-7 or 7-8 weight in weight forward sink tip line.
Probably the most important thing to learn is how to mend the line as it drifts with the currents.......mending is the name for removing tidal influence on the line that causes the fly to behave abnormally

IMO, before anything else most important thing is to learn to cast properly.
Join a a fly fishing club or get help from a tackle store that specialises in fly fishing.
On the Sunshine Coast try http://www.tienfly.com/

Get your first rod to be cheaper one but with unconditional warranty.
You can trial error the limits and if you break they just give you a new replacement free.
Learn how to cast, watch Lefty Kreh videos online.
Then get a good quality couple of rods, 5wt for fresh and 8-9wt for salt.
Fresh water start is much better for you, no need to wory about tides, wind will be easier to deal with.
I use floating line for fresh water and intermediate sinking for salt water.
if you want a quick lesson give me a call next time you are around Brighton and I will take you through the basics.

Jones tackle at Chermside sell a lot of fly gear and do learn to fish/cast courses for a reasonable price. Do the coarse and educate yourself first and then select the gear that suits you and your targets.
