    Flush mount electronics and thieves

Hi guys, looking at making a new dash for my boat and flush mounting my gps/sounder with the gauges, I currently have the gps on a bracket which makes it extremely easy to use when leaving the boat anywhere that's not in the shed, so my question is, how do you guys that have your electronics flush mounted prevent against thieves, I've seen reefmasters solution with the plate that padlocks over it all which is a great idea, but my boat doesn't really allow for something like this.

    cheers, Corey.

It's actually pretty rare for flush mounted gear to get knocked off due to the effort/time required to undo the mounting screws for the flush mounting depending on what gear it is. If you do want to make it harder again and don't mind doing it, sikaflex makes it almost impossible to get gear out of a dash without a fair bit of knife work - just be careful if it's a painted alloy dash - sika sticks to paint better than paint sticks to ally. You can either seal it into the dash or simply run a bead around the gear behind the dash panel once it's mounted up. Some punters are also paranoid about having their secret spots knocked off out of their GPS. Easiest way to prevent this is a master switch for the GPS that is either key lockable or if you have a lockable half cab - inside the cab

a thief who is REALLY wanting your goodies will always find a way. like michael moore said to the security door specialist "it will stop a knife... what about a spear ?" scotts on the money though . i only put 2 blobs of Trex onto the corners of some of the units we flush mount on dispkay and boy are they are prick to remove when .. you know.. the next month they release a new unit

Makes you wonder why electronics aren't simply protected by a Pin number the same as a phone, would give more peace of mind when dropping off at dealers etc to have work done, and would make thieves think twice (maybe).

Insurance, and plenty of pics of your units mounted in your boat and keep the boxes they came in. $500 (excess) is bloody cheap for new units I reckon.

Good points everyone, makes you wonder why no one has cottoned on to the pin number yet, I guess I'll just do like you say and deal with it, not that I leave the boat anywhere often just something I'll have to get used to
