    Thru hull transducer problems

    FRUSTRATED

I have a 2000 model Seafare V-Sea that has and I believe factory installed fish-finder and thru hull transducer.

The picture shows a thru hull transducer fitted to an old x65 lowrance unit.

    I am replacing the x-65 with a Garmin 75dv

I was considering the Garmin (Airmar) B117 thru hull transducer, BUT the surface where the transducer currently sits is somewhere between 10 & 15 mm to short to accommodate the outer flange of the B117, which is 75mm.

Does anyone know if you can still get thru hull transducer similar to what I have (see below picture) that I would describe as flush or recessed.

If not any suggestions on the outer flange of the B117.

What are your thoughts on filing a few mm of each side of the outer flange (not disturbing the actual transducer face) to make it fit snug and reducing any potential drag or disturbance.

I have spoken to Garmin support about doing this and although they say it should be okay, they will not commit themselves.

I tried to find a number for Airmar support in Australia but can't seem to find one, only an American number. I wanted to talk directly to them and see what they thought/suggested.

Sorry if you don't understand what I am trying to say, but feel free to ask questions,

    Information and suggestions appreciated.

Thats exactly what Seafarer did when they started fitting these transducers. Had to replace one at one stage for a client and had to file down the replacement to fit in the strake. I can't see a problem with it. Just make sure you don't subject the transducer to any high impact forces in the process. The elements are ceramic and can crack if you manage to drop them etc.

Lowrance were the only ones with the style transducer that is in your hull and discontinued them when the 192KHz frequency was discontinued.

Why would the b117 not go straight in.. it may read better with more of the face exposed, and it will take a good hit to damage it. I have a B175 that's exposed 8-10mm in my hull

    Thanks for reply.

The B117 will go in, but the outer flange is larger that the flat surface where it needs to sit.

Can you see any problems with filing some of the flange away so it will sit flat and not protrude over the outer edge.

    Thru hull transducer problems

I've just been and spoken to the bloke who is doing the work for me. I'm just not totally confident dealing with something that has a hole in the boat.

He tells me it was an absolute bugger to get the old one out.

We got under and measure a little more accurate and it now appears that we may only have to file off 2 or 3 mil to make it sit flat on the surface.

Feeling a lot more at ease.

    Thanks for all replies/suggestions

They can be fun. Best way is to remove the nut and use a BFH from the inside. Well easier to say than do on most occasions though.
