    Canopy side protection

Has anyone put clear roll up side pieces on there canopy? I'm looking to be able to go out in bad weather more often even just for a cruise maybe have a bbq in the boat. I put a picture of what I'm talking about looking for a bit more protection from the wind and rain. Cheers.

Good idea. I was thinking of putting shade cloth on one side to keep the sun out.
Will be interesting to see what ideas others come up with come up with.

Unless you're Superman with X-ray vision, it would be pretty hard to see other boats coming from the side! would sure provide protection from the sun and wind though, one thing to consider is side wind, full clears like that would be like a sail

apply some acrylic sheets on the side panel and your good to go from bunnings

The photo that Luc put up is of a "camping" set up for a member of the Gladstone Sportfishing Club. It is not a permanent set up on the boat.

The guys do long range trips from the Roper Bar down to the mouth of the Roper, and live on board the boat for several days at a time. That set up is so they can get a bit of cover when sleeping of a night time, or when the elements make life uncomfortable. It is quick to put up and take down when required. The bloke who owns the boat is very happy with it. Did not cost a lot to have made, and does a very good job of providing some temporary shelter when it is needed, and does not get in the way when the main job of fishing is underway.

    cheers

If you go to Ray's chat page, there's plenty of examples of canopy's.

The problem is that you need more than just side protection if you are underway, you need the front quarter on the windy side as well, otherwise the spray will go straight through the boat.

Of course it can be done. But you do end up with a lot of windage, the boat gets blown around a lot more, and then the issue of having to take it down to get it out of the way for fishing.

Like almost everything boating, it will be a compromise. And whether you prepared to deal with those compromises?

It can get to the point of asking yourself if you have the right kind of boat to do the things that you want to do. No boat does everything well. A tinny is fundamentally suited to some jobs, and not others.

A good set of wet weather gear for the crew may be a better solution to the problem!
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

    Re: Canopy side protection

long time ago I have had 4.2m with 35hp on the back and i had the side, front and the back clears like as your canopy in the photo. The front size of the canopy i could roll up half of the side ,and was awesome protection on rainy days and with canopy fully up there were no problem when moving around and getting on plane at all .(it looked unusual to some people but i liked it and the guy i sold tinnie to )
spend few nights at Pin in that tinnie with no problem and it was good for cold winter nights

Thanks all. I'm thinking of doing like MyWay did. I could have them half rolled up mostly and just put them right down when needed. Might even do the front. Cheers.

In fact any marine trimmer would be more than capable I am sure so shop around..
