Honda 225 Back to front controls

Took my boat for a test today to check operation and prop performance. Motor ran well but for 2 problems...1 charge light and alarm came on after about 15 minutes but disappeared again after revving in reverse gear?????
2 to go forward I have to use controls as if going astern and vice versa.
I had some work done when I first bought the motor to shorten it ( was xxl 30" shaft) and water pump housing repaired as letting water into g/box. Wondering if shift control could have been installed arse about or whether they've given me a counter rotating g/box??
If this is the case can I run the thing backwards without causing damage or do I look for a left handed prop??

If its a left hand g/box its not designed to run all the time in reverse, I would find a left hand prop

take the prop off and inspect the prop shaft spline, if there is a grove or ring machined into the splined area you have a left hand gearbox. What area are you in?

I have a solas left hand prop if you're looking for one.
But came off 1996 mariner, unsure if would fit though.

Thanks, will check out the shaft and go from there. How much for the prop?

Checked the prop shaft, no ring or groove machined into the splined area so think it's a right hand box. Control box came with the motor so unlikely linkages would be back to front. Motor was originally an xxl 30" shaft n had it shortened to 25". Could the shift selector have been installed back to front??? May not need that lefty yet ovakil😕

take the control cable off the connection point on the engine, run the engine and pull the gear change leaver forward.. see what way the prop turns

its possible the shift rod in the box is 180 out but then the shift rod from box to engine would be 180 out as well... who did the 25" conversion?

Local Suzuki dealer as that's where the engine was located when I looked at it.

might pay to take it back to the shop that did the work. surely it was working properly before the conversion?

Yeah went and saw him yesterday said I basically didn't know what I was talking about and that it was impossible to get them round the wrong way!! To be honest I'd be happy to never have him touch it again. He had removed the motor from the other boat and instead of simply unplugging wires he cut them off flush so I couldn't even join onto them. Wondered why the trim wasn't working till I found what he'd done. Water separator the same! The guy's as rough as hessian underpants!

Ok I took the cable off and with the motor running pulled the shift lever forward (toward the bow of the boat!) and prop turns backward. Push the lever towards the stern prop goes forward
