Christmas mischief? - Honda patented direct injection 2 stroke technology

    Hi all

saw this on another forum - consensus seems to be that it is applicable to dirt bike or stationary motor applications - given past utterances it would be interesting if applied to outboard motors

sure as hell will make the PR folks do some interesting 'spinning'

maybe - just maybe - Evinrude were right to stick it out with E-tec's?

I am off to get some popcorn and an ice cream cone.

    enjoy

Not really for marine applications just yet but as a starter platform who knows. Might be the next big thing in outboards.

Might be some sort of a spin off from their affiliation with Tohatsu? Can't imagine Honda having two stroke anything these days, they persisted with 4 stroke bikes, mowers and everything else when others had only 2 strokes, and in a way, the decision proved right.

Very interesting. Honda haven't invested a lot on advancing their range in the past years, particularly at the higher end... Weight remains an issue with their V6 range for boats in the 18 - 23" range. That said, I cannot see them moving away from 4S when, as Noel said, they pioneered the 4S outboard... unless they went for a ride in a G2 and had a premonition...

Yeah that design is a rocker crank. Don't expect multi-cylinder versions or high rpm. Good for water pumps or generators. Interesting aspect is the exhaust valve rather than a port, I imagine that although the injector not being direct ( it's in the transfer port despite that the article says it's set to inject near tdc ) it's trying to decrease pumping losses like an Atkinson cycle in a four stroke. Would have thought that may have been easier with direct injection as no potential fuel losses. Interesting but not a performance engine.

Of of course I know nothing so am probably wrong.

    Cheers

My understanding is that Tohatsu and Honda are no corporately related - totally separate entities - their tie up is a commercial arrangement for a rebadged product. Many reasons could be true - including Tohatsu are building a base market with larger HP motors whilst they develop their own larger HP 4 stroke motors. Only they will know.

That said Honda are the largest maker of internal combustion engines in the world and the only IC motors that are not pollution controlled to the extent of cars, trucks and boats is the home garden/maintenance type equipment and if Honda can get a motor that cleans up these 'dirty' motors it is on a winner.

    Swof63 might have nailed it

I am assuming that Honda is like all other corporations and that they are constantly looking for ways to gain a sustainable competitive advantage and thus gain profit. If a DI 2 stroke gives them that they will use it. Which leads to the question of 'If it is acknowledged that DI 2 strokes are cheaper to make that a 4 stroke why are E-Tec's price as if they are a 4 stroke?" Simply put - a company will sell their product to maximise profits and if it doesn't it is failing in its duty to its shareholders - eg the banks.

Anyway if Honda think DI is a goer in any form or size or application- it is good as it is another option and you could expect them to get it right.

    cheers

Just been looking at this new engine. More powerful, lighter, less moving parts, can run higher compression ratios, can run various octane fuels etc. I think this will be the way of the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c19kn3drdFU
