    Boat theft Moreton Island

Brother in law was telling me about a work colleague who had anchored up on Moreton Island and camping on shore and woke to find boat gone. My first comment was it broke anchor or drifted. BIL reckons boat was found bashing against the shore at Cleveland. So I'm still thinking drifted away on incoming tide with NE wind. But here's the kicker. It was stripped clean of fishing gear and anything of value.
Most interesting thing is BIL reckons the cops told his work colleague it happens more than we think.
So that got me wondering is this an urban legend or is it for real?

Not the first time something like this has happened - maybe not from Moreton but opportunistic scum can show up anywhere. We used to camp at Toorbul prior to the caravan park being moved from the waterfront. Some germ was making a habit of it there and did eventually get caught.

This was always in the back of my mind when I camped at Moreton. I bought a GPS tracker for less that $100 on ebay. Chuck in a $5 aldi sim card and I can send her a text messge and its sends back its gps location on google maps. You can also set up geo fencing, so if it moves more than x amount of meters from where you anchored it, it will call your phone. worth looking into lads.

yup if u plan to camp on island, it 100% to get a tracker for it, if it get stolen or drift away it make it easier to get.... otherwise just get a cat and bring it right upto shore and motor up

what sim plan have you find to be the cheapest/best and at what price? I brought a tracker from Jaycar a few years ago and it's crap, I was never able to set it up properly and the instructions were poor. It sits in the draw and tracks nothing.

Just the aldi prepaid one mate, the sim comes with a certain amount of texts. Its cheap to get more if you need. Credit expires after a year though, so it shouldn't cost you more than $15 a year.

Check out these guys, I use to have one in my bike - http://www.gogps.com.au/

I put a Telstra sim card in it and phoned Telstra when I set it up and informed them it was being used in a GPS tracker. They set it up for that use.
Can't remember what plan or cost though, sorry. maybe worth phoning them before you buy the tracker to sort that bit out.

Also check with your insurance company, you may get a discount on your insurance.

A hidden kill switch is the go, but that will not save the magic fishing gear,
