Honda makes good outboards, no doubt. But in the 60hp range the Yamaha 60 4 stroke is just a proven motor. It would have to be one of the biggest selling outboards of all time. So many of them out there and you only hear good things about them. When you go to sell a your boat with a Yamaha 60hp 4 stroke on the back its easy to sell and you get top dollar. This cant be said about any other 60hp. Theres things in brochures, marketing gimmicks, technological breakthroughs bla bla bla, but real world figures speak louder than all of that. I think all the 60hp 4 strokes would be good, but unless they were a crap load cheaper than a Yammy I would stick to whats proven.

The Honda has VTEC and 02 sensor feedback.

VTEC gives more top end HP and 02 Sensor feedback ensures the engine is at the best possible economy at all RPM bar WOT. Yamaha does not use any of this technology

Far from it, The Honda can maintain the best possible stoichiometric air fuel ratio for economy and when needed the most powerful fuel/air mixture (BLAST)

If Yamaha is so good why only a 4 year warranty?

Honda needed to offer a 7 year warranty to attract more buyers as their sales were dropping off.

Only if you think almost an extra kilometre per litre isn't much (4.5 km/l vs 3.6 km/l at 3500 rpm - Yamaha's best rpm) Honda and Suzuki absolutely belt Yamaha at 60 hp. It is a dinosaur.

So you have done back to back comparison test with all three motors on the same boat in the same conditions with accurate monitoring equipment,or is it a case of "my mate had one"

Were is you comparison to rule out other brands or are you just going on what others have said is a good thing? Yamaha have good sales numbers I agree could this simply be that one sheep is following a flock of other sheep.

Yeah, I made those figures up to have an argument with someone I've never met......
Or if you want to check the manufacturers websites they freely publish test results on various hulls in various situations.
The difference isn't a little bit mate. And it is constant over all the hulls.
I don't sell Hondas, but I've had a couple. The old boy has the 80 Honda with blast and its fuel economy is exceptional. We sport fish rooneys and all points between for 40 odd litres of fuel. But this thread isn't about 80's on 4.8 polycrafts.

I have owned a yamaha 60 and think its a sweet motor too. Honda maybe a better motor at 60hp than a yamaha or suzuki, but its past pricing structure sure has hurt. I know when I was looking at that size motor, Honda were very expensive 5yrs ago . I personally would put total price and servicing at the top of this list. Followed by economy, weight and last engine size. Then you have the biggie of what prop you get or need which is a dealer relationship issue.

. I dont think there is that much difference in this power range to warrant a messiah rant. 10% of nothing is pretty close to nothing. $450/yr compared to $350/yr in fuel is really that big a deal when your service cost could gobble twice that amount.

Personally, the Etec gen2 have really shown up the rest of the field with its innovative features. Unfortunately, it hasn't filtered down to the lower powered motors yet. But it does show all the others have only been playing leap frog with each other.

I have a Mercury 40hp and father inlaw has a 60hp a Mercury both 4strokes. Great motors that haven't missed a beat. Mines done 150hrs and Geoffs over 500 now. No problems and great on fuel. Were a lot cheaper than the Yamaha when purchased.

I do rate Hondas highly, and would happily own one. But theres no doubt when you go to sell your boat you will get better money and sell it quicker and easier with a Yammy 60hp 4 stroke on the back. Honda have lifted their game with the 7 year warranty and better pricing, but without the dealer network they just wont ever get decent sales numbers. Unless they really drop their pants on pricing, which is what they seem to be doing, but so is everyone else at the moment.

I suppose it all come down to what is important to you. If simplicity, abundance of spare parts, low weight and a good reputation is whats important then yamaha have the motor for you.
other manufacturers seem to offer Longer warrenty and have much newer designs making the most of the modern tech for better power curves and fuel usage. It all depends what you plan to do, trolling all day or running a long way out then it seems the Honda would be the pick, Twin engine, less weight allowance or shorter runs then yamaha would be the choice. With Suzuki and mercury somewhere in the middle ground.

But remember the all important factor that comes above mere trivialities of fuel, reliability, cost and dealer support. could you really honestly live with a silver motor hanging off the back.....

hi I bought a new 75 etec oct 2014 2 stroke cant fault it yet !! almost as quiet as a 4 stroke no smoke not to sure on fuel economy but it uses less than I think It will !just had a service all good here mate it pushes 489 stacer bowrider really well !
