Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (GRMN), today announced Quickdraw Contours, a free, easy-to-use software feature that lets mariners instantly create personalized HD fishing maps with 1-foot contours on any body of water. Quickdraw Contours results appear instantly on a compatible Garmin sonar-enabled chartplotter and the maps can be kept private or shared with others at no cost.

“This is a great way to supplement Garmin mapping options and improve your time on the water,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “With Quickdraw Contours, you’ll no longer have to worry about not having coverage of your local lake or body of water. And while the data is being collected, your system will tell you where you’ve been so you can be confident you’re getting the most comprehensive coverage.”

Quickdraw Contours is powerfully simple. Once it’s turned on, users will instantly see contours with labels generated right on the screen as the boat moves – there’s no waiting around or sending the files to Garmin. The results are quick and accurate, and can be viewed in real-time, or created in the background for use at a later time. For the most comprehensive coverage, Quickdraw Contours clearly shows where usable depth information has been collected and where gaps exist, so users can easily see what still needs to be collected.

To further customize and tailor the data to meet customer needs, Quickdraw Contours also offers user-generated points of interest (POI) and waypoints. The POIs can be used to notate interesting information about a particular location, and waypoints can be added to mark a favorite spot or notable location for future reference.

The collected data can be stored on any off-the-shelf SD or microSDTM card, as well as existing Garmin BlueChart® g2, BlueChart g2 Vision® and LakeVü HD Ultra cards. Once the Quickdraw Contours data has been collected, users can opt to share it with others simply by copying the files to another card, or they can choose to keep it private; Garmin does not require that the data be shared, nor is there a fee to keep it private.

This software feature will come standard on the new 2016 echoMAP® CHIRP products, and will be available as a free software update for all other echoMAP and many GPSMAP® series products. It can be used with any depth transducer, including Garmin PanoptixTM, HD-IDTM, DownVü, and NMEA 2000 transducers. With preloaded cartography for inland or coastal waters, the new echoMAP CHIRP series offers support for Garmin Panoptix transducers, and all units come standard with Garmin QuickdrawTM Contours, a new software feature that lets mariners instantly create personalized HD fishing maps with 1-foot contours on any body of water. With NMEA® 2000 compatibility1, the new echoMAPs can also receive information from sensors, engines, autopilots and more.

Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. With NMEA® 2000 compatibility1, the new echoMAPs can also receive information from sensors, engines, autopilots and more.

With integrated CHIRP sonar, enhanced mapping options, built-in GPS, and support for Panoptix and NMEA 2000, the echoMAP CHIRP series is a powerful step forward in the evolution of combination units for anglers,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “We’re excited to bring these units to market and believe that they truly provide the best fishing experience possible, and at price points to meet the needs of the value-minded customer.”

Like previous echoMAP models, the CHIRP series is available in bright, sunlight readable 4-inch, 5-inch, 7-inch and 9-inch color displays with an intuitive, keyed interface. All models are equipped with a built-in, high-sensitivity 5Hz GPS antenna that updates location and heading five times per second for extremely reliable position accuracy at all times.

For the clearest scanning sonar of fish and structure on the market, this new series offers built-in CHIRP traditional sonar and CHIRP DownVü and SideVü technology. Instead of just sending one single frequency, CHIRP sends a continuous sweep of frequencies and interprets them individually upon their return, creating crisper fish arches with better target separation. For anglers who want to see objects and structure below the boat, DownVü provides a nearly photographic view with excellent resolution and target separation in both freshwater and saltwater. The echoMAP sv models also add SideVü scanning for customers who want to see what’s located on both sides of the boat.

Additionally, the 7-inch and 9-inch echoMAP CHIRP models provide support for Garmin PanoptixTM all-seeing sonar. With Panoptix on board, fisherman can see real-time sonar imagery at video-like speed. It shows an image of fish swimming and moving toward or away from the boat – even while stationary – in real time and up to 100 feet away. The echoMAP CHIRP series will support all Panoptix models, including the new PS21.

    Introducing Garmin® Panoptix™ PS21

Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (GRMN), today announced the Panoptix PS21, a new transducer optimized for a trolling motor that features its popular Panoptix all-seeing sonar technology. With the PS21, fishermen can now add the most attractive feature of Panoptix, LiveVü Forward, to a compatible Garmin GPSMAP® or echoMAP® CHIRP chartplotter to see real-time moving sonar images ahead of and around their boat. The PS21 is the newest member of the Panoptix transducer family. Other Panoptix transducers are available in transom and thru-hull mount options for inland and offshore application.

“Panoptix LiveVü Forward delivers a whole new perspective to fishing, and thanks to the compact weight and size of the PS21 transducer, it’s perfect for use on a trolling motor,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “We’re excited to make this revolutionary sonar technology available for all types of anglers, from entry level to professional.”

With Panoptix on board, fisherman can now see real-time sonar imagery at video-like speed. Unlike traditional or scanning sonar that only provides historical data of what’s been passed over, LiveVü Forward shows an image of fish swimming and moving toward or away from the boat – even while stationary – in real time and up to 100 feet away. Anglers can see their lure as they cast and retrieve it, pinpoint its relationship to structure and watch the fish react to their bait.

The Garmin Panoptix PS21 trolling motor forward transducer . It’s compatible with Garmin’s new line of echoMAP CHIRP 7- and 9-inch models, as well as the GPSMAP 7400/7600 series, GPSMAP 8000/8500 series and GPSMAP 7x1, 8x0, and 10x0 series chartplotters. Garmin® StrikerTM Fishfinders Offer CHIRP Sonar and Built-in GPS

Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (GRMN), today announced the Striker series, a new line of fishfinders with CHIRP traditional sonar and CHIRP DownVü and SideVü technology that come standard with a built-in high-sensitivity GPS receiver. Fishermen will now have the ability to not only see fish and structure below the boat, but also to mark hot fishing locations and get back to them. With GPS on board, users will also have access to accurate speed over the ground (SOG) information, even at very slow speeds. Raising the standard for fishfinder performance and ease of use, the Striker series is a powerful tool to help inland and near-shore anglers find and catch more fish.

With brilliant sonar systems and unrivaled fishing features, the Striker series is the entry-level solution for anglers who want the best sonar available at an affordable price,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “CHIRP is the sonar technology our customers want, and thanks to the addition of the Striker series, it’s now available across our entire product line. Striker also adds GPS, so anglers can get back to their favorite fishing spots next week, next month or next year.”

The Striker fishfinder series is available in bright, sunlight readable 3.5-inch, 5-inch or 7-inch color displays that feature a new rugged design and keyed interface that’s built to withstand the harsh marine environment. All models are equipped with a built-in high-sensitivity GPS antenna and waypoint map, so marking and navigating to favorite fishing spots and other areas of interest like brush piles, stumps and docks, is quick and easy. When trolling, the high-sensitivity GPS provides an update once per second, giving fishermen the precision needed to dial in the exact trolling speed and optimize lure presentation. Users can also share waypoint data across multiple Striker units, as well as all echoMAPTM series devices.

CHIRP traditional sonar comes standard on all of the new Striker devices. Instead of just sending one single frequency, CHIRP sends a continuous sweep of frequencies and interprets them individually upon their return, creating crisper fish arches with better target separation. Even when the fish are stacked up, CHIRP sonar helps anglers better determine how many, and which one is the largest.

For anglers who want to see objects and structure below the boat, the Striker dv fishfinders feature built-in CHIRP DownVü scanning sonar, which provides a nearly photographic image with detailed representation of objects, structure and fish in both freshwater and saltwater. The premier 7-inch Striker 7sv also adds SideVü scanning for customers who want to see targets and structure up to 750 feet on each side of the boat, without being directly over them. Users can use the split screen feature to show various sonar options along with the waypoint map.

All Striker fishfinders come with everything anglers need – including a trolling-motor and transmon transducer and mounting hardware – to make getting on the water fast and easy. The five new models offer flexible mounting so the devices can tilt and swivel for an optimum-viewing angle. An optional flush-mount kit is available for in-dash installation. Additionally, the Striker series is compatible with a wide-range of optional Garmin scanning transducers to customize sonar performance and installation options.

That quickdraw sounds interesting. I have seen a commercial unit that does this. The information from various boats could be shared providing some pretty impressive images of the bottom features.

I haven't kept up with sounder technology, still happy with an old fashioned Furuno 582. Are the traditional units being phased out by these chirp units? What are the pros and cons between these chirp units and say the Furuno 587 or new model 588?

"This software feature will come standard on the new 2016 echoMAP® CHIRP products, and will be available as a free software update for all other echoMAP and many GPSMAP® series products." That's the quote. I'm looking forward to using it myself on my EchoMap 75SV.

how does the software compensate for the waves? or do we need absolute flat water to get a proper mapping?

It can't without other sensors. It is possible they are trying to do it just off GPS (better than nothing but IMO wouldn't be real accurate) but for the other brands (commercial set ups) they usually require to be hooked up to a GPS compass that also incorporates pitch and roll sensors to apply the corrections.

Re: Garmin Quickdraw , striker range and new chirp echomaps

Had a thought, spots on the river or even inshore grounds I fish can vary depth by up to 3m. Think that Garmin will compensate this with an in-built tide-time feature, or will I constantly be updating it depending on the tide I'm fishing in?

  9. #9

Re: Garmin Quickdraw , striker range and new chirp echomaps

Assuming (hopefully) they have done their homework, it should apply tidal corrections that are part of the chart data automatically . If they haven't then it will be a problem. Dams will always be an issue as water levels rise and fall

word on the street is that the the raymarine EV100 sensor is going to allow for heave compensation on the cheap to smooth out bottoms.. so perhaps someting a long those lines with the reactor system for garmin?

  11. #11

Re: Garmin Quickdraw , striker range and new chirp echomaps

That is a possibility moose. The Raymarine and Garmin compass sensors having 9 axis motion detection will definitely "see" the movement - just a case of writing the smarts to allow calibration relative to vessel size and location within the vessel - if it isn't already done, and then adding the smarts to the sounder software to allow it to utilise the info.

Any word on the street regarding a rebate system for those who bought the recent (but soon to be obsolete) EchoMap Series? I'd much rather my 75SV had chirp and NMEA2000 if available.

Fair call. From what I'm aware, Navico had offered one for some time (not sure if they still do)?
