    Tohatsu 4hp Interchangeable Parts?

    Hey Guys

lately i have been keeping an eye out for a outboard for my older brother and his young son who is 8 years old and a very keen fisher boy, i came across a Tohatsu 4hp 4 Stroke 2006 model it had been under and upon inspection and disassembly it looks to have had a roll on a beach

the engine was seized but not by mechanical fault rather between the piston and cylinder head was loaded with sand actually the exhaust port was so packed the sand was dense it took all of 5mins with a screw driver and hot water in the laundry sink to clear it all out

the valves freed up very easily there was no binding and no scratches i could feel with my nail and no rust so it passes the test

once the cylinder head was removed the crank spun freely but has a tiny lip on the cylinder top

the carburetor what can i say that was chocablock full and corroded

so that brings me to this question, does anyone know which other japanese makes and models are compatible with the Tohatsu 4hp 4 stroke 2006 model? trying to find a second hand carby to keep the rebuild low on price so it's worth my time and a joy for my brother and his son for many years to come

Not too sure if Tohatsu and Honda had any alliance back then? But Mercury might be worth a look, Merc and Tohatsu have been badge sharing for years.

Tohatsu has made the small Mercs for many years now. Your local outboard wrecker will be aware of that and should be able to match parts for you without too much trouble. I suspect that if you even check the current year Tohatsu and Mercs in that hp you'll find they are the same cc capacity as well as weight, which means same motor, different colour paint.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

i just called FNQ Outboard Wreckers they said they have never wrecked a tohatsu 4hp 4T yet, must be rare motors

waiting on a call back to see how much the parts are new from a dealer in Sydney

i looked at this carby the other day and screwed the bowl back on and said its rubbish but being so hard to find another one do u guys think a ultrasonic bath will get rid of the salt?

it needs the float pin mount welded which is corroded and maybe the section around the main jet on the outside but i dont think this would effect much

if u guys think its cleanable im willing to do the ultrasonic bath... i have never used a ultrasonic cleaning machine so have no idea if it works hence the question

I tried a brilliant idea i found on youtube last night i filled a pot with water and added lemon juice than soaked the carby plastics and everything on the gas stove on low heat i had the pot sitting only 1/4th over the heating pad as not to boil the pot

the guys on youtube were only cooking there carbys for 10-30mins i done mine for a 1 hour

all the caked on salt is soft as butter

but now i have a problem removing the brass main jet its threaded i have a fear of TIG welding on a brass nut that i may melt away the whole jet mounting/housing, how would u guys go about this?

im thinking of just using JB Weld for the float pin/mount what do u guys think?
