I have the same unit on my glass boat. Works for me. I run a transom mount 50/200 transducer. Pretty sure you will need to drill it. Remember. Sika is your friend!
I'm thinking of buying the Lowrance HDS7 Gen 2.
What are people's thoughts on this unit ?
What are your thoughts on the type of transducer- shoot thru the hull or transom mount ?
As for transom mount, I'm not keen on drilling holes. Is it possible to glue securely. What are your thoughts ?

You will need to drill. Sika's good but it ain't that good. Option B is a tilted element through hull but if you aren't happy with a few screws you may not be happy with a 50 odd mm hole through the bottom either. Option C is a wetbox but if you intend doing any deeper work this is probably not a good option. You would also need to check you have enough room in front of the timber pads that are glassed in to mount bilge pumps etc to. As OMD has posted, Sika or similar is your friend for waterproofing, as is a countersink bit to remove the gelcoat from around the hole so it doesn't chip or crack when you drive the screw in.
Iv just been reading about this new concept. Sounds like it might be worth a further bit of research

The new boat (new to me - a 2000 model Seafarer V-Sea) has an old Lowrance X 65 fish finder (flush mounted) with a thru the hull transducer. So updating to the Lowrance HDS7 gen 2 combo I could go with another thru the hull transducer, depending on price.
I've had no experience with thru hull transducers, but:
1. Are they a good unit ?
2. Can install be done by most handymen ?
3. How are these secured ?

Yes - but with any transducer a poor mounting location will give poor results.
Yes - just follow the instructions. Plenty of owners do their own installs. The hardest part (once you have wrapped your head around putting a hole in the boat mentally - some really struggle with this) will be removal of the old transducer.
The old transducers are different to the new ones. The old ones were designed to be put in when the boat was built and sat flush with the hull. The new ones protrude by about 5mm and have a flange on the outside of the hull that is bigger than the hole and a nut on the inside. They were also different sizes. The most common of the older type was the 20 degree which from the outside measured somewhere about 40 odd mm in diameter. The replacement transducer is bigger so you need to make sure you have room. Post up some pictures of the old one(from inside and outside) if you wish so we can see what we are working with.
i find transom savers a bit of a cop out, a good install or good glass repair is fine. sticking a block on the back seems.... hmm . i dunno. but im strange, i listen to 90s dance music in the shop
Shakey I sikaflexed some bread board stuff to my transom and attatched both transducers and it has been solid for over a year now. I roughed the glass up with sandpaper before the glue job and just self tapped the trannies to the composite. Works fine and no holes in the glass. I have a hds7 gen 2 touch with the downscan transducer and the 83/200hz unit. Might fall off one day but I'm happy to keep fixing it rather than drill holes.
I run the same unit. Its been tops. Maybe keep in mind you may (should) get the side scan transducer so you will need a spot to mount it also. Get to know the quick buttons such as screen dimmer/power button. Great unit.
OMD has some strange friends.
