Suzuki or Yamaha 4 Stroke?

Hey Guys,


Looking to sell my Yamaha 2012 Tiller 2 Stroke 3cyl 40hp outboard and buy a 40hp 4 Stroke. I am torn between the Suzuki and the Yamaha. They are roughly the same price with alot of the same options.


I am looking for any feedback from anyone who has late model Tiller Suzuki or Yamaha 4 Stroke outboards around the 40hp range?

umm, I'm no expert but having gone thru the same process a couple of years ago I ended up going with a 175 Suzuki for several reason I guess ... but couldn't be happier.

guys I know that have bought/ upgraded to the new lean burn 20hp, 40hp and even one guy with a 90hp suzi lean burn cant believe the economy difference from a 2stks, and even compared to some slightly older 4s.

plus all the other good stuff ... quieter, no 2banger burn, deeper reduction - swinging a slightly bigger prop, reliability, looks horn .... etc.

but I think either way you go man, upgrading from a 2stk to either new 4stk you will be impressed I'm sure.

bit dearer to service but you start saving from day one ..... no 2stk oil cost and better fuel economy all round (IMHO)

Mate go with the dealer that looks after you the most. Both motors are good so make your decision based on your ability to deal with the mob that will be handling your servicing and any warranty issues.
For the record I have a 50hp Suzuki tiller and love it.

Hi mate,
I have a 30 4 stroke Yamaha 2009 Tiller if that's any good to you, that I have had since new. I am very happy with with mine, It is quiet and pretty good on fuel too. I actually have cerebral palsy and the electric start and power trim is worth its weight in gold.So far I have clocked up 128 hours.
Yearly servicing is about $300-400

I thnk all brands of motors are excellent these days.

i believe you should choose a motor depending on the specs of the specific HP your after. I.e CC of motor, amount of cylinders,weight and dealer location. Then decide what brand suits the best.

Decided on the Suzuki. Now to sell my current Yamaha 40hp 2 stroke.

what pushed you to the Suzuki over the Yamaha

I like the Yamaha tiller arm everythings in easy reacho f the hand and the troll control is easy to access

didn't buy it based on that u tube clip did you ?
no tacho so no idea if the engines were within pm spec no prop details
fuel tests were done by refilling a tote tank not exactly accurate
I guess a etec dealer wouldn't provide a unbiased review lol

Just went from a 2 stroke 15hp Suzuki the latest light weight model to the new lean burn Suzuki 20hp 4 stroke.

Fuel wise, Suzuki give you a 25l tank with the 15hp 2 stroke and only a 12l tank for the 20hp 4stroke as they know full well the 2 stroke drinks fuel like cordial.

Took the new 4 stroke out all day last weekend after filling the new tank. This weekend went to refill the tank and realised I didn't need to fill it when I checked it as I only burnt 3 litres last week.

Previous the 2 stroke would use 15 + litres for the same trip.

Only down side is the power of the 20 4 stroke at wot is less than the 15 but it is a trade of fuel wise.

Love the lean burn Suzuki I am sure you will to.

yah same, the guy up here ... "well my neighbour to be honest, upgraded a 25YO 2stk suzi to a new 20hp lean burn and was offered a 12L tank from the dealer ?? ... well after several deep discussions we flipped a coin and he bought 2 tanks lol ... anyway after his first full day out on the water he used 6.8L ??? so yah just didn't want to flag that info as a deciding point because we were both blown away with the results

no engine is that miraculously better

Suzuki claims 23% better fuel burn
small capacity 2 strokes and the light tinnies they are on are in reality not that bad on fuel
for those considering upgrading spending 4-5k on a 4 stroke to save $9 worth of fuel each trip doesn't really add up (ignoring the no oil quiet running traits of a 4 stroke)

Upgrade cost for me was no way near that after a resale

I didnt swap just for saving money on fuel savings but yes i am ecstatic with it but my reasons were very different for changing over.

And mine is not a tinnnie its a extremly custom fibreglass boat and i know my figures are accurate.

so on the exact same trip the 2 stroke used 15+ litres and the new 20hp Suzuki used 3l
i find it very hard to believe you did the exact same km under power

its almost impossible to do the same trip as you drift move travel and even gps cant be relied upon
as they don't factor in drifting or moving around on anchors etc
only way is to fill a known sized container with fuel and drive in a straight line at fixed revs

Yamaha are a basic 4 stroke engine but a good one. Suzuki are the same with better technology, lean burn, oil bathed timing chain. I have a Suzuki DF90A. Very happy unreal on fuel. Go Suzuki, better than Yamaha.

So you have done back to back comparison testing with both motors analised the data and can say that Suzuki is better than Yamaha.
