Thanks to this short sighted vote buying exercise to appease the greenies the area I fish will now be hit by the pros even more. The economic benefit will be at best minimal. This may be good for SEQ but not for where I am.
What do you mean John? Can you explain pls?
~~~><))))*>
I am right on one of the boundaries and they will simply shift down the coast a bit adding to the pros already working in the area so i wll get hit even harder.
I'm sure you have your fav fishing spots now John, but if you live right on the border of one of the new net free zones, doesn't that mean you'll have an improved "net free" fishery very close to home? We'd kill for that down here.
~~~><))))*>
I have the spots I like but the new net free zone will mean a lot longer road trip, three times the distance or more, to get to usable boat ramps for the area. The fishing pressure will increase in the area I prefer to fish. All to buy a few votes.
So you'd prefer to keep the gill nets in? Makes sense.
If you look into the policy detail a bit you will find it aims for an overall reduction in net fishing effort of more than the displaced effort. That is, aiming to buy back licences with a history in the net free ones, from all areas. You should end up with more and bigger fish AND less nets.
"All to buy a few votes".... Well I hope so. Its about time rec fishers were taken seriously by politicians.

I would like to see an overall reduction in net fishing the legislation would be for a statewide buy out but what this vote buying exercise will do is displace the effort at least in the short term.
