Anybody use a Raymarine 5'' Dragonfly combo?

    Hello All,

Does anybody use a Raymarine 5'' Dragonfly ?

they are on special at the moment with a chart as well.

    Are they easy to use?
Can you create a mark on the fly?
My old Lowrance was Enter, Enter to create a mark or point of interest.

How hard was it to install?

Any relevant comments would be helpful.

    Thx.

    Crocodile,

I had one on my old boat, great value for money, was very happy with sounder performance, resolution was great, charts were fine just a bit slow when zooming in and out, more to the point slower than what I was used to on mates boats with higher end gear.

On a small boat, limited space or budget they are a good choice.

Easy as any other brand to install.

    Hello Adam_G,
    Thanks for the advice.
What were the keystrokes to record a point of interest, ie. chart shows a promising bump of rock, I want to record a quick mark.
With the old Lowrance it was Enter, Enter.
With the Dragonfly is it simple or do you have to drill down through menus?
    Thanks

Gday mate. I have the 7" Dragonfly. Its super easy to add a point on the go. The tricky part is renaming it later on. Takes a bit of time to punch in. Stoked with the sounder and charts with the navionics gold card. The screen is super bright in direct sunlight too. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the mount. Easy to install and adjust angle and direction, however if you hit a decent lump the screen starts to swivel down.
    Cheers,
    Ben

The 6 inch models are a bugger to install and remove from the mount. If you intend to remove it each trip check it out apart from thqt very good screen much better display you can even read it in sunlight wearing poloroids
    cheers

My 5 inch unit is 6months old and i have sent it back for warranty. The magnetic chart door did not keep out the moisture and coroded out. Destroying my card also. I have never opened chart card door until i saw my charts had stopped working. Very disapointed with ingress protec tion of this unit as they should be able to handle salt spray/ rain and a light hosing on cleanup... let u guys know of outcome.

I had the same problem as dc1978, mine was the 6" & even though out of warranty they replaced the unit with a new one, the gold navionics was corroded yet this was not replaced & still works with the new unit.
obviously the corrosion is a weak point if the unit is exposed to water spray. Just one other comment my son purchased the smaller dragonfly with the "C" map card, not as detailed as the gold navionics.

I had the 5 in my old boat. While it was a great sounder for the clarity, I too had to take it back, as my whole unit wouldn't turn on within 6 months of owing it. Took it back to Whitworths and had no problem replacing it straight away with one off the shelf.

Re: Anybody use a Raymarine 5'' Dragonfly combo?

Any GPS used in hot weather can be subjected to sudden changes in temperature if hit with a large quantity of spray (or a hose as previously mentioned) that will literally make it suck air and moisture in. This is not just an issue with displays either - there have been several models of radar over the years that have suffered with similar issues from a variety of manufacturers. Best advise - keep them dry and you will have a lot less issues and certainly don't hit them with a hose at the end of the day.
