Sorry Dave - I didn't actually take a measurement - just remember being surprised when I drilled the hole that there was insulation there as well. Provided you drill the hole where you have a bit of access from the outside you can always cut a larger hole in the outside glass skin to accommodate the nut if required. You may need a right angle drill attachment or similar
