Using Humminbird Matrix 97 as GPS only (no transducer)

I am seeking some advice on using an older Matrix 97 as a stand alone GPS unit. I have just purchased the 999 SI unit and want to continue using the Matrix as a GPS, but have no room (or need) for two transducers.
I have only just finished the installation and the 999 fires up fine, the Matrix however detects no transducer and so goes into simulation mode. Is there a way to change settings on the Matrix to work as a GPS only? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Plug the transducer in, turn the unit on and disable the sounder in the menu. Pretty sure that from then you can turn off and unplug and it will no longer search for the transducer.
