    Cruise Craft Charger 506 Repower

G'day all, hope you can help. Need to repower my Cruise Craft Charger 506 that had a 1989 Johnson 140 V4 hanging off the back. 20" Transom sits low with the old motor where water is level with the bottom of the splash well drains but i'm told this is normal. Old engine weighed about 166kg. Candidates for the replacement are Etec 115 or 130 and four stroke Merc 115, Yam 115 or 130 and Suzuki 140 which is top of the list at present. What are your thoughts re weight and performance?
    Cheers, Martin

    Hi Mate,
I've got a Cruise Craft Raider 166, so a very similar hull. I repowered from the original Johno 125 V4 to a Ficht Ram 90, which is 142 kg from memory. Fuel economy improved out of sight. Top speed was 40 mph on a pitot speedo and is now 36 mph on GPS, so not a lot in it. It does sit lower than with the old motor. I looked at a new 115 etec recently and decided that it would likely be too heavy for my hull, so if I did upgrade, I'd stick with the 90.

Depends what you're doing with it as well. If using it as a ski boat, bolt on an etec 130HO and have some fun. If you're going offshore, probably look for a compromise between weight and HP.

    Cheers

Appreciate the input Craig, after talking to Cruise Craft the Suzuki 140 moves to the top of the list with some weight redistribution, moving battery and fuel forward. Also add the theory of more horses improving resale due to the bowrider configuration as opposed to straight fishing boat.

Re: Cruise Craft Charger 506 Repower

Remember that the old horsepower ratings were at the crank not at the prop. So 140hp in the old days is about 115hp on today's motors.

1989 HP is at the prop Rip, about 7-10% difference I'm told.

Yep, no more than that, probably closer to the 7 end I reckon. Just can't physically be more losses thru 1 x bevel gear set, a few seals and bearings/bushes. However, old tired motors with low compression etc would obviously have other losses, the more tired, the bigger drop.

The International ICOMIA Standard 28-83 came about in 1983 to regulate the inconsistencies with how outboards were rated at the time – and most were at the crankshaft. 1985 (from memory) was the first year that all outboards had to comply with this standard (rated at the prop shaft).
