Thread: Bertram hull weight

    Bertram hull weight

Hi all can any one tell me a rough hull only weight for a 21ft Bertram?

    Re: Bertram hull weight

Hi mate. The answer is zero! Bertram didn't build a 21ft boat. Or more accurately, Caribbean didn't build any 21ft Bertram's.

Any more info on the hull? Year, model?
Caribbean built the Commodore which was 6.12m or 20 ft .9 inches and weighed between 750 and 900kg.
Bertram built the Bertram 20 that had a length of 6.17m or 20ft 3 inches and weighed 900kg.

    Edmo,

You often see people adding 2ft to the claimed length of a boat after it has a pod fitted. If it was a full depth pod (ie a waterline extension) you could add the extra length although still not really true. Another thing also is that many boats offered as Bertrams are not Bertrams. Particularly around the 20ft mark.

International Marine in Melbourne (aka Caribbean and also aka Bertram until the Bertram name was bought by an Italian company and International/Caribbean had to change the name of their cruisers from Bertrams to Caribbeans) built the Bertrams under license from the U.S. They built a 15, 18, 20 in the smaller boats and then from there to the bigger boats the 23,25, 28 and beyond.

Post at a link to the boat you are looking at if you like and we can verify it for you. The most obvious sign of a genuine Bertram 20 is the 26 dead rise at the stern. Not many other boats out there with such a deep dead rise.

    Cheers

That's a Bertram 20' Baha Mia. They also made a 25' version, but nothing in between from memory.

International Marine also built the same hull into the Pride 20, and as already mentioned, has a massive deadrise. Smuggler ran a similar 28 deg. (from memory) in their 21 footers with a floodable hull to increase stationary stability.

These older 20 footers appear to be making a popular re-power and refurbish option these days.

Yep Bertram 20 or Pride Bahia Mar.
20 ft or 6.17m. 22 degree dearise and hull only weight of 900kg. Quoted weight with sterndrive on the trailer is 2000kg. Fuel capacity was 204l and max hp for the sterndrive was 250.

26 degree deadrise, Norts. Edmo that's definitely a B20. Make sure the floor and transom are sound. Also have a close look at the engine in particular the compression and gear case oil condition. That series of engine ran from 86-93. Can't tell by the pics but if the engine cover comes off in 2 pieces (called a clamshell cowl) it's 86-89 and if a 1 piece cowl it's 89-93. Price seems quite good if boat checks out ok. Cheers

That's interesting BM because the info I got was from Jeff Webster's Secondhand Boat Secrets and his stuff is usually pretty accurate. 26, even better.

Thanks to all for the great and detailed info, unfortunately upon inspection found a massive pair of cracks inside transom where pod is bolted on and having been quoted around $2500 to replace its just not a viable proposition.
Oh well i will keep looking

Yeah there's some inaccuracies in that publication, great books though. Strangely I went through this in 2007 on Fishnet lol!! Exactly the same situation where somebody quoted 22 degrees from the Webster publication. Here's what I posted back then:

    Sean,

Just measured the genuine Berty 20 I have here.

1950mm chine to chine or 975mm to centreline.

470mm (approx and erring on the side of caution) deadrise from the horizontal. somewhere between 470-480mm in actuality.

    so therefore, tan "angle" = 470/975 or "angle" = (470/975) / (inverse)tan

= 25.73 degrees (erring on the side of caution)

    Cheers,

    Nicholas

Mal555 yeah those Smuggler 6.3's were insanely deep vee!! 28 degrees sounds right.

Hey mate you need to use the go advanced button and upload pics to Ausfish then attach them otherwise we can't see them.
