    Trailer repair - frabricate & welding in new cross members

    Hi Guys, please help with a reccomendation for trailer repair - I need 4 cross members fabricated and welded in on an Oceanic Trailer (Nope, no help from them). Would prefer North Side or even better Redcliffe area as easy for me to take the boat off and leave tied up to a mates pontoon. Would look at complete re-furb including new brackets, pins, rollers as I have little time to do myself (And I can't weld even though I have a welder).

    If you have room mate, drop the boat at home on some tires - easy enough to do. Have you priced a new trailer - that seems like a pretty extensive rebuild and the dollars may well add up. The other thing to consider if you are getting all the cross members re-done is that the gal will be burned off the inside of the rails so unless you either seal them up and fill them with something or get the frame regalvanised you will probably be back where you started before too long.

    Rest of the trailer seems in good condition, just the cross members due to bloked drain holes and a mate telling me years ago not to drill them out and unblock them or risk damaging the gal, not all advice is good advice!

    Boat is at work so thinking about using the forklift and three snatch straps to lift the boat straight up, drive the trailer out and dropping back onto tyres, but the yard is concrete so my concern is the boat unblanacing and hitting the deck.

    If the fork can comfortably lift the weight and you have some flat webbing slings heavy enough, that will work - just need to get the weight distribution right so she doesn't slide out. If you drop a boat off the trailer the right way though it comes off pretty easily and controlled though. It can be done with one man but better with 3 or 4. I usually hook the car up, trim the motor right up, secure the transom to a fixed point and slowly drive the trailer out from under the boat releasing a foot or so of winch cable at a time so the boat can never simply slide off - setting up your tires as you go usually singles under the keel and multiples either side to stop it tipping . Single handed have a 15 foot tinnie off in about 5 minutes but know it can be done at least up to CC685 size. Ultimately though your boat so whatever you are comfortable with.

    Don't use snatch straps, they stretch and they are not load rated. Not sure what type of boat you have, but if the Fork is rated to lift it on slings, you're better off using slippers and just sliding the tynes under the back of the hull, how they do it for Marina racks. Be very, very careful using the fork, as the centre of the lift will be a long way out.
