Johnson Tilt Sensor Question

Gidday, I have a 1980 60HP Johnny.....

What is the low down on the sensor that screws into the tilt ram on the left side?

I brought this motor with no real wiring included in regards to this sensor.

What wire goes to it?

Ive rebuilt the rams and tested the variable resistor and seems to be running fine on a continuity test.

How does this sensor actually work?

I had a lad tell me to just leave it disconnected as they never worked... Mine actually probably will.... Wouldn't mind giving it a shot...

Mine do on 115HPs but they can stop working if they stick.

You need to keep them lubricated and salt washed off after use.

the cylinder on the port side, is the sender cylinder for the gauge. it uses a ball bearing and spring to work up and down a winding inside the cylinder, much like a fuel gauge does. most nowadays don't work and are left disconnected.

Awsome ausandy.... I was trying to figure out how the sensor would work on the ram..since you point out there is a spring and a ball bearing, then that makes sense straight away!!... It so happens when i was replacing the seals, there was no spring, or a bearing....bugga

Now to find that bearing and spring...anyone got one....LOL...

A trim gauge is probably the most useless device made, regardless of what a gauge reads, the trim of the boat is what's important, and that is a "feel" thing, not a number on a dial.....

I find the trim gauge very handy to get close to the sweet spot then fine tune it to the conditions of the day.

Check the BRP website for an exploded drawing, there's a few extra bits inside the Port ram. Look under OB accessories in the drop down menu.

You can also cross reference part numbers there to see what other motors the bits you're missing also fit.

Having my trim setup will indeed give me a reference point being a newb,,,however in saying that,,,the argument/debate whether to have one working or not will always be conversation points.

In my case... I have a Johnny that is an oldy but a goody and will look like new when its finished..hopefully run like new too...

Ill post up some pics of where im at with it.

Im looking forward to someone saying oneday... "Oh..your trim sensor works..isnt that just novel"...LOL

Is there anyone here that can put me onto someone that might have the spring and bearing for the trim ram sensor?

Boating parts websites list the whole sensor setup. I'm hoping someone here might have one laying around to part out.

Here are just a couple of pics of the trim assembled for this Johnny. A lot of time has gone into making this recon flawless.
The rams and electric motor housing are finished in a charcoal hammertone.
The white is a 2 pack.

Of course the motor will get the same treatment soon aswell as the motor cover.

I'd grab the picture then measure the hole and look for a ball maker & a spring maker. LOL

Actually I've used a spring maker in the past for specialised stuff and had great success.

First I'd ask for help at the iboats forum, they have a few old hoarders over there. Should also find out if the buts were SS or not.
