    Trailer problems

Doing my final checks after connecting the trailer up today and about to drive out the drive way ...

    Safety chains on ... Check
Trailer light plugged in ... check
    Brake off ... Check
winch cable tight ... That bow roller does look right???

As the photo shows, the bolt appears to have snapped which seams a bit strange. The problem is it is currently sitting down hill a bit so won't be able to move it back to do replace it. Was heading of old mans place ready to go out early in the morning.

The plan now is to try to get stuff needed to fix it as early as possible in the morning. I took measurements before I left the boat (it is not stored at my place), but forgot to look at what size bolt it is that I will need for the roller. Any guesses?

    I reckon at least 10 to 12mm.

At that size roller it will be a 17mm hole to suit a 16mm pin.

    Re: Trailer problems

I'd take a 12mm bolt as well, only a couple of bucks and it might save you another trip. It dshould be a 15 or 16mm, but hole looks small and if the current one broke, it just may be a 12.

Bingo on the 12mm bolt. I went to 2 shops this morning, got a roller that would get me by but could not get a proper bow roller assembly. Got back to the boat and the 16mm spindle was too big. Nobodies fault other than my own as I should have measured before going and getting something. We t to the local hardware and got a stainless steel 12mm to at least get me out today. Got on the water by about 11, across to the Little Sandhills for some whiting with the kids and dad and back by about 5.

Photo of jury rig and also glass over at Moreton.

will look at a more permanent solution next weekend.

    Cheers

Bugga! Didn't know you could get rollers with smaller spindles than 16, but I suppose that's what's under all those small tinnies (bit of overkill to have 16's thru them), and obviously used on winch posts. But yeah, as Feral mentioned, if 12mm broke once, it'll do it again. Time to make a 16 fit I reckon.

My only concern with making it a 16mm is that I will have to drill the stirrup that it sits in out and might weaken that too much? When I replace properly I might use a stainless or high tensile bolt instead of the galvanised one that came out of there.
