transfering waypoints to garmin 1000series specifically 1020xs
i just thought id post this up as it may help someone else. I recently had a bit of drama trying to put waypoints on a garmin 1020xs for a mate. I have dealt with many gps units but ive been out of the game for a couple of years. Firstly i copied the marks of a lowrance hds7 in both usr and gpx format using a sd card. i tried the card in the garmin unit with no success. then i copied it to the computer and tried to convert it to gbd format which is another garmin format using gps babel, easygps and garmins own mapsource. i still couldnt get it to work.
heres how i got it to work:
its in two parts, firstly basecamp downloaded properly from the garmin site but wouldnt install. it would just say something like "please wait while it installs" but never did.
i downloaded and ran 7zip. then right clicked on basecamp download on the computer and extract all. i then clicked on BCMAIN and it installed, i did the same with USB_64 in the usb_drivers folder as im running a 64 bit system.
after doing this basecamp opened properly.
then secondly:
format a 2gb sd card in computer
insert into garmin 1020xs and copied units maps to card (this formats it again and then adds the units info(serial etc) to the card)
next using garmins "basecamp" program i opened the lowrance waypoints (i cant remeber if it was the usr or gpx file, im thinking gpx)
then inserted the sd into the computer, basecamp then recognized the card and showed the 1020xs in "my device" section on the left
then i clicked on "send to device"
i then put the sd card back in the 1020xs unit and clicked "merge from card"
and it finally worked
what happened to just copying files from one unit to the other with a sd card and no computer?
hope this helps anyone else that tries to do the same.

tried that but for some reason it wouldnt work, there was over 500 waypoints that have been put together on about 7 or 8 different units over the years. im thinking one of them had an issue which made it unable to load the rest.
it would just say the card was blank in the garmin unit even though it clearly had the file on it when i put it in both the computer and the hds7 unit.
