    G'day

Leave them, clean, rust convert and paint them.

    Hello limbo,

Rust usually looks worse than it is.
I agree that they do look bad and that would be irritating.
Have a look at this exploded diagram.

Maybe try and draw one of the bolts and see how hard it is, you may be pleasantly surprised.
If you can get them out it shouldn't be too hard to get stainless replacements.

My 2012 115 Yamaha 4 stroke had the rust on those two bolts as well. I was wondering whether or not i could replace them too.

Dig a little deeper into it lembo.

Check out the wire (ground strap) Part #19 on the drawing above.
Make sure it's intact & perfectly connected on both ends.

Normally I'd simply say to clean it & paint it but this is worth finding out a little more about.

My tiller arm (OMC) is rusting out before my eyes due to a broken ground strap that's supposed to connect the motor to the stern bracket.
In essence your ground strap looks to be doing the exact same job as mine is supposed to do, connect the outboard to the stern bracket.

Don't let this slide as there could be other damage happening that you're unaware of, or it could be nothing.

thanks for the help guys, thanks Fed I will have a look at that. They are 04 motors so getting a bit on in age. they have new anodes on them when I bought them but I was thinking maybe previous owner went a long period without replacing them ? rest of the motor is pretty good. Are these bolts stainless?

Dave is correct. They won't come out without a fight, and even if left to fend for themselves they'll outlast all of us.
    And no, they're not stainless.
