Diesel outboards
What's everyone thoughts on these diesel outboards, i suppose price will have a large influence as the weight increase is insignificant IMO. Check this out.

Re: Diesel outboards
not sure about the belt drive. Reckon there will be four factors, reliability, price, economy and weight. A 20% additional weight will limit what hulls it can be fitted to. Economy will need to be close to that of the new age four strokes, price will need to be within a reasonable percentage of the new tech petrol motors, and finally, popular uptake will need a few brave folks to take the plunge and demonstrate that they are as durable as the modern petrol engines.
There are some factors that appeal, diesel is a far safer option on water, and doesn't go stale as quickly. The low end torque should be good value when trolling, and noise levels should be good at cruising speed.
It will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Common rail technology has a big future, injector life will be interesting.

Re: Diesel outboards
Some valid points thylacene. I would expect the fuel economy to be better than modern 4 stroke petrol outboards but no figures have been posted that I can find so time will tell. 2000 hrs until the first rebuild is pretty ordinary though.
