    Tailor

The weather and tides aligned for me to fish one of my spots at Point Halloran. The plan was simple, fish the last hour or so of the ebb tide for flathead and then catch some tailor when the sun dropped a bit.
The plan seemed to be working from the very first cast when I got a solid hit, and a couple of head shakes suggestive of a flathead. The first brief glimpse of the fish suggested a good flathead – roughly the right colour and shape – but something wasn’t quite right. It turned out to be a small wobbegong.

With that disappointment behind me, another hookup soon eventuated, and with the sun still high in the sky a tailor leapt in the air. A couple more quickly followed and it looked like I was going to get a good haul. Tailor being tailor they promptly disappeared. I fished for the next couple of hours with a only an occasional grinner to keep me a company. The sun was now quite low and I was beginning to wonder if after the good start I would be stuck with only three fish. Just as I was getting concerned a few bites came and I extracted another three choppers before they disappeared for good this time. The catch was rounded out by two flounder in two casts.

The plan hadn’t come together perfectly, but tailor smoked in Mallee and Earl Grey tea was on the menu.

    Re: Tailor

All except one of those fish is bleed. The unbleed fish I knock the fillets off and use them for bream bait.

The rest are bled by breaking the artery with my thumb, rather than cutting the whole neck. There are a few others on this forum and a number of guys who fish comps also do it this way. It was the way I was shown as a youth fishing SQAFCA comps.
