    Damage control

I was installing my new Garmin GT50m-tm transducer but hadn't mounted it yet and while my back was turned my lovely little 3 year old daughter decided to play with it and managed to drop it around 2 ft onto hard pavers. Externally it looks fine but I imagine that the internals of these things are probably quite sensitive. I won't be able to get the boat in the water for at least another week so I'm fretting on what kind of damage may have been done. So I just need someone to tell me it's all going to be ok and that these things are indestructible.......

ummm they are glass internally ....will be smashed to pieces inside ...probably have cracks all over your screen when you turn it on ....

    Re: Damage control

No reason why it should not be ok as everything inside the transducer is encapsulated in epoxy. If you wish to check it out hook it up and place on a piece of wet glass a couple of feet above the ground and it will read the distance from the glass to the ground.

    Re: Damage control

The elements in most transducers are piezo ceramic crystals and they will chip/crack at times when subjected to high impact forces such as being dropped. That said I have dropped plenty in my life and I have seen some that have obviously had extreme impacts that still function ok. Only thing you can do is give it a rip. In all likelihood it will be fine. The child on the other hand if it is broken, I can not vouch for.

Thanks, good to know. If it is damaged then the above mentioned child will just have to pay me back. Probably with Frozen dolls and colouring in pencils.

If it does fail, send it to me I will get it sorted for you.... all transducer will handle a fair bit of rough handling.. lets face it they will cop a hiding on a transom

    Re: Damage control

my vote will be with the all fine notion. they anticipate impacts and 2ft isnt the greatest fall.
