Deep Water Bend ramp - unfortunate day

A couple of fellas had a bad start to their boating yesterday. Fortunately no-one hurt.

As I understand it, they were launching, one of them went to grab something out of the vehicle, something happened, hand braked popped off and the vehicle rolled back in. They had to cut the winch strap to stop the boat from going under. The vehicle and trailer went under. I understand it went in about 9.30am.

The recovery crew were pretty good. The pontoon took a bit of a hammering but didn't look too bad - might be closed at some time in the future for some repairs though. The tricky part was trying to get it out from under the pontoon.

The vehicle was a GM Suburban, so a big lump of a thing. I can't believe how deep that river is right there, this thing was well submerged, even only a few metres from the ramp. Eventually it popped up under the pontoon. The tide had washed it against the pylon. A number of boats waiting patiently in the river until about 7pm.

Number one rule at the ramp - NEVER rely on the handbrake. This can not be overstated.
