Networking 2 x Lowrance HDS Gen 2 Touch units

When networking 2 units do they both need NMEA input or will the 2nd unit read from the 1st using the Ethernet cable?

    Ethernet cable is fine.

Depends what you want to share between units.

The optimum, to share everything possible, is to have both on the N2K network, plus linked by an Ethernet cable. That's what I have.

Why? There are some things only shared over Ethernet, and some only over N2K.

    Thanks Moonlighter

I will install both on the network plus Ethernet

Hey Moonlighter what are the extras that NMEA gives? Is it fuel usage etc.? I've only ever used the Ethernet to share sonar etc. It works great.

Have a read of the document linked above to learn the differences. If you want to cut to the chase, scroll down to the table in pages 22/23 for the listing of what data is shared over each of Ethernet, N2K and N0183. Unfortunately it is in a table format and I can't get it to cut and paste and keep a sensible format, so you will have to look at the document.
