Don't know your circumstances but I got the 411 just as it was superseded by the 412. Pretty good value from memory and has been trouble free. Point is I think they all go pretty well so I chose the cheaper option.
Icom would be my pick of the cheaper radios as well. They have not been totally without issue but on the whole a good product.
Intriguing way to put it Scottar. I would never put any Icom in that grouping. Curious to know what would in your opinion be a good example of an expensive VHF set?
GME gx700 "BRAND NEW" is a nice improvement over the older 600 VHF , with or without DSC , black and white.
UNIDEN V355 BRAND NEW . budget model no DSC. solid construction
UNIDEN V455 BRAND NEW "replaces the 425 , Waterproof. DSC.
LOWRANCE link5 "usually well priced. comes with everything
Garmin VHF100I "start of the premium models. HUGE screen, dsc etc
raymarine RAY50 "new nmea2k dsc super bright screen
and then there are a few more intense models from most of those brands

Once they break a grand you are talking expensive. Take look at some of the offerings from Furuno, JRC, Skanti and the likes. Some of the Icom sets are sub $300 now - you used to pay $500 for a GME GX558 fifteen years ago. Even a base model uniden was about 300 back then.
